Throat Erosion..How much=too much???

I have been casually checking-out M1 garands hoping to find a shootable bargin with some history.

Many of the issued M1s now being sold list a throat erosion number. What exactly do these numbers mean and at what point does the rifle significantly lose accuracy or become unsafe???

    above 5 accuracy starts to drop...
    above 7-8 i will not shoot it...
    personaly i would try to stay under 3.5 for a match shooter
    and under 5.5 for a functional piece.
    i am sure that others have differing opinions.
    i have seen people shoot GARANDs with little or no rifling left, and terribly sloppy bores and poor throats, but its something i would avoid.

    While mrmike is 100% right, I have found that Muzzle Wear measurements are far more important in determining accuracy. A gauge similar to a TE gauge is used. MW is about 1.0 on a new barrel; moderate wear will be in the 2.0-3.0 range, & > 3.0 will not likely be accurate.

    You can use a round of USGI M2 ball ammo as a "poor man's" MW gauge. Insert the point in the muzzle & measure how much copper jacket shows; 1/4"=new, 1/8"=moderate wear, & no copper=shot out.

    MW has a profound affect on group size. i see folks cleaning there guns from the muzzle end with metal cleaning rods and jags. this will have a negative effect of accuracy ASAP.

    i think that a gun with bad muzzle wear is safe to shoot, or collect, but may not be the best match style shooter.

    For Garands, I can't say; but I will say that I have a P14 Enfield with nice muzzle and crown, but about a THIRD of the throat burnt out from cordite ammo; it shoots fine with cast bullets but doesn't do jack with jacketed; personally I think ANY rifle that passes even rack grade criteria will be fine unless used for national matches.
