    was just wondering because the o.d. on the 3 in and the 3 1/2 in gun are the exact same thickness.

    Irregardless of the chamber thickness, you have to consider the rest of the mechanical lockup of your shotgun. In addition, the carrier probably won't handle the longer casing and there's a problem with enough extraction clearance.

    I was thinking of putting the 3 inch barrel on a 3 1/2 in gun.

    It might work, but I don't want to hold it while you find out. I value my body more than the price difference for the right barrel.

    I am not going to do this but I would like some technical reason why it would not be safe. The receiver is rated for 3 1/2 shells, and the barrel for the 3 in shells is the exact thickness as that of the 3 1/2 in shells.
