Is this 22 Mag ammo?

I'm no expert and this may be a stupid question. I've never owned or shot a .22 mag. I'm not familure with the round. But I have seen one recently and it looked bigger than this one. This round has a copper case and lead bullet which measure 1.165 inchs tall with my caliper. The diameter of the case is .245, The rim measures .295 and the diameter of the bullet is .215. The bullet is crimped on below the case top and the case is stamped "S" above the crimp line. The bottom is stamped "U". Any ideas? Just'a wondering.

    It does measure 5mm in diameter at the bullet. Didn't know of a rimfire 5mm. Who made them? When were they made?

    My WAG, is that it's "22 Remngton Special".

    Remington brought it out to compete with the 22 Winchester Rimfire.

    Believe the "U" on the base denotes Union Metallic Cartridge Co.

    Early 20th Century.

    The 5mm rimfire was introduced by Remington in about 1970 in their 591[mag fed] and 592[tube fed] bolt actions. It was discontinued in about 1975.It is a bottlenecked cartridge. I believe you have a 22 Remington Special. This was Remingtons version of the 22WRF.

    Don't know about the bottle necking. If it is it's not very noticable. I would say it's not a bottle neck.

    The 5mm has a definate bottleneck...very noticeable.Any chance of taking it to a gunshop?I'm sure they could ID it in a minute, and I wouldn't think they would charge you. I think you'll find its a 22 Rem Spec.

    Sure I'll be by there Sunday. Can you define bottleneck for me?

    Sure can. Bottleneck is a catch-all term for any case that has a shoulder, like a 30-06[and most rifle cartridges].This is in contrast to a straight-walled case, like a .22 or 38 special.

    Well like I said I'm no expert. I thought the bottleneck thing was a NO BRAINER. It was but you just never know so I thought I should ask you seemed pretty sure that these were 22 Remington Spec. I can safely say from one Bob to another that these do not have a bottle neck. Any other ideas?

    Go to your local gun shop, and ask to see some .22 WMR, and .22 Spec. shells. Compare them with what you have.
