S&W .38 Police Revolver NIB

I would like to sell a .38 Stainless S&W Police revolver. It is a NIB 6 shot with the Delaware State Police engraved on the side, along with a picture of a Trooper with the "smokey the Bear" hat. The gun as stated is new in the box, never fired. Will the engraving hurt or help the value. Possibly an interest to a Law Enforcement memorabilia collector. Any advice on a starting value? Thanks.

    All modern S&W's have a model number; you can't even discuss one of their guns unless you know what it is. Open the cylinder & you will find it stamped on the side of the frame. You also need to know the barrel length.

    Find out what the "plain" version of this revolver sells for by looking on the Gunbroker auction page. Do a "smart search" of completed auctions to find what these guns have actually sold for in the last 90 days. The average sales price would be a good place to start your own auction; special editions usually sell for the same, or slightly more, than the "plain" version of modern guns.

    Thanks for the replies. I pulled the box. Both the gun and box state 64-3. In the box are all of the original papers, warranty registration, and cleaning rod. The box also has the original ship label on the end. As suggested, I have looked at the items on the auction. The engraved models that are pictured, are of the fancy scroll type. This is a standard model, with the Delaware State Police engraving. I was unable to locate any specifics on memorabilia or collector items. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Unfortunatly, no on the wooden box. This gun was part of the original supply order for the DSP, in the spring of 1982. I finished the academy that year, and bought an extra of my issued revolver. It came in the standard blue S&W box, and has been sitting there since.
