Old Remington Shotgun
I have an old Remington 12 ga double barrel that was passed on to me by my grandfather. It's a nice old gun but I know little about it. Hoping you all might help. It has exposed hammers and the only information I can find aside from "Remington" on the breech are the numbers 41151 on the fore stock - hope I am calling that by the right name. That seems strange as that piece is removable and could be put on any gun. The numbers are stamped in the wood and the metal bracketing on the piece. I can add a picture if that helps.

I bought a shotgun from a guy I know, and was hoping someone could tell me if I got a good deal or not. I paid $50 for both the gu and 2 cases of shells (but lots of the shells are cracked/splitting and worthless.) He said he bought it about 20 years ago and only fired it twenty times or so before putting it and the shells in storage and forgetting about it. The gun is a Remington MAGNUM Wingmaster Model 870.
Does anyone have any info or know of any sites where I can find out about this gun (age/price, etc)? I searched on google but couldn't seem to find anything. Also, how should I dispose of hundreds of shotgun shells that are cracked and useless? I obviously can't just throw them in a dumpster.0 -

There's a 2 or 3 digit date code on the left side of the barrel,just in front of the reciever.With that,we can date your 870.Condition is VERY important in determining value,so a good description will help us help you.In any event,unless this gun is a total wreck,you just got yourself one hell of a deal.I just traded my "Magnum"(95%) for two guns worth about $600 together,(but then the guy didn't know what the Remington no.4 in 85% condition was worth either)[:D].All that aside,mine was worth $275 give or take.
As far as disposal of the old shells go,maybe you know someone who reloads who could salvage something out of them.

K, I think it says WA 79. As far as condition, like I said, there are no cracks or chips at all on any of the wooden pieces. There are 2 slight lines on either side of the metal rail that the pump handle slides on. It's obvious that they were caused by the cocking action. There is no rust on any of the metal.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention it is a 12 guage. It says "*12GA MAGNUM FOR 3IN SHELLS" . The * is a little star drawing.0 -

btatedash: You got a good deal for $50. A standard 12ga. 870 Mag, is worth $160-$225, if it has a Vent rib add another $50-75. This gun was selling for $250-$300 20 years ago. ( I bought one back then, for $265, plus tax).
As far as the shells, get rid of them, if the case is splitting/cracked the powder is breaking down. This could be dangerous.

Value?Depends on where you are since it's more of a duck gun.Here in Central Texas,there's not enough ducks to hunt,so they don't bring much.I just got lucky and found a 870 lover who didn't have a "Magnum" in his collection and just had to have it.

Jacksonville. Any of you Fl guys know of a place I could take my gun to get it checked out? My gf has some land out by Destin where I can shoot, but I want a good gunsmith to examine it, especially since the seller said it hadn't been fired in 20 years. 0 -

You may want to check with Rugerniner, he's in Jacksonville or that area and may know of a good gunsmith.
