California legal?

I sold a S & W model 27-2 in 3 1/2" barrel. Can I just send this to an FFL, or do I have to do a private party transfer on it. Both I an dht ebuyer live in Ca. Thank you

    i would recomend talking to the local sheriffs office on this.the rules vary from state to state i live in tn and can sell short and long guns to anyone in the state without any trancfers of ownership but out of state i have to go to sheriffs dept to transfer ownership

    The California Department of Justice has a Firearms Division.
    A good time to call is late afternoon.
    They are the bottom line. I often get conflicting answers from different FFLs in CA.

    My understanding is that a CA resident can sell it to a CA resident, but it does not have to be a FTF transfer.
    A local FFL would get your info, confirm you are who you claim to be, and ship it to the receiving FFL.

    The receiving FFL would charge the buyer for receiving the gun, since they make no money from that sale. They will also DROS it to the buyer.

    However, a local FFL just told me that when they receive a firearm for transfer, it becomes theirs, and they are technically "selling" it to the buyer. The FFL cannot "sell" a non-approved CDOJ handgun.

    Lassiter was just kicking this over the calguns political discussion pages. And half the answers went one way, and other half the other. If it is a PPT, but not a FTF PPT, it is still between two private parties; that's why I don't understand my usual FFL saying they were in fact "selling" the firearm to the receiving party.

    An interesting note, brought to mind by the comments of profesor01:

    So a local Sheriff in a lightly-populated County can transfer a non-CDOJ handgun to an individual at his/her discretion.

    Thanks guys,
    Unfortunately I live in L.A., so finding using a sherrif from a less densly populated area is not possible. I guess a PPT is the safest way to do things. Thank you all
