where do i put it...

I recently purchased a nice over under shotgun and had been keeping it in one of those aluminum/ foam breakdown cases. A friend told me that the gun will rust in there. My only other option is in a cheap gun cabinet that stores several other guns that are used often. I am afraid it will get beaten up in there. Do the experts know if the hard cases will make it rust and if so have any sugggestions.

  Buy one of those Silcone treated gun socks better than nothing or a hard case.

  Jonesj8: Long term storage in that type of case isn't recommennded. Your friend was right, everytime you open the case, any crap in the air can settle onto the foam. Especially when outdoors, at the range or your favorite shooting place. Any gun oil or grease that comes in contact with the foam, now is a magnet to attract other impurities. Your case is meant for transportation, not long term storage. Put it all the way back in the gun safe, then you wont bump it when you pull out the more frequently used guns. My recomendation.   One thing that I have done to my foam gun cases is to put some sicila bags in them to soak up any liquid. Also use some good gun oil on the foam. This will help out. I have not had any of my guns rust in their cases. If the foam does get wet; let the foam dry before you put a gun in it for storage. If you are careful when you take your guns in and out of the cabinet it will not get beat up.

  When I store a gun in a hard case, I lay it between layers of wax paper to keep it from touching the foam. I have done this for years without a rust problem. I do store them in a cool and dry location.

  here's a tip. when you do your laundry, take that one sock that everyone in the civilized world has left over. put two charcoal briquets in it, and tie a knot in it. put it in your gun case, and it will absorb the moisture for over a year in humid georgia weather.
  
  remember, it's not the heat, it's the humidity.
