the 1903 springfield was designed in 1903, the 30'06 was designed in 1906. what was the original caliber of the 1903 springfield before the 30'06 was developed?

    30-03, Same caliber. 220 Grain projectile. Longer neck on brass.

    Only lasted a couple of years. U S Army decided to adopt "Spitzer" type bullet, that the Germans developed.

    30-03 7.62x64, used a 220gr bullet
    30-06 7.62x63, used a 150gr bullet

    The 30-03 was accepted in 1903...The 30-06 was accepted in 1906..The venerable Old 30-06 Cartridge was a slightly modified 30-03 Cartridge that had the neck shortened by .07".......

    thank you. I always wondered about that. was there anything really wrong with the 30-03 or was it just not as good as the 30'06.

    Higher velocity, better long range ballistics, was the advantage of the 30-06, over the 30-03.

    Ah, well, actually there was a .30-01 used in the prototype Springfields which became the M1903. This was like the .30-03 with a noticeably thicker rim, think a rimless .30 USA to get an idea of it. And I won't go off on the really exotic experimentals which bridged the gap between the .30 USA and the .30-01 . . . . [:D] This was actually a time of dramatic and frequent change in our MBR and ammo.

    Just one small nit to pick, caliber (for small arms*) refers to the diameter of the hole in the barrel only.
    Other than specifing the diameter of the bullet, it has nothing to do with the cartridge the firearm is chambered for.

    *In navel guns it references the length of the barrel, measured in bore diameters. IE: a 2" 40cal would have a barrel 80" long.

    My Dad told me that he qualified with the 30-03. He said it kicked like an angry mule, and that he learned to not wrap his thumb around the grip to avoid bruising his cheek. According to him the 30-06 was a lot easier to shoot.
