What makes a shotgun a assault rifle?

    A rifled bore makes a rifle and a smooth bore makes a shotgun so you can't really turn a shotgun into an assault rifle. If you add two of these features to a semiautomatic shotgun: Folding stock, pistol grip, fixed magazine capacity above five rounds, or a detachable magazine you have created an assault weapon.

    It has to be a semi automatic to earn the classification of "assault weapon". Pumps, bolt actions (or even lever), single shots, or double barrels just don't make the cut! By the way, Section 921(a)(5) which defines shotguns clearly states that a firearm intended to be fired from the shoulder which will chamber and fire a shotgun shell (either pellets or a single ball/slug) is still considered a shotgun, rifled bore or not.

    To answer your question, refer to Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide (ATF P5300.4), page 7:

    "(30) The term "semiautomatic assault weapon" means - .....

    ....(D) a semiautomatic shotgun that has at least 2 of -
    (i) a folding or telescoping stock;
    (ii) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the
    action of the weapon;
    (iii) a fixed magazine capacity in excess of 5 rounds; and
    (iv) an ability to accept a detachable magazine."

    Don't mean to threadjack but this is related to the post. Mark, I am curious I have a Remington 870 marine magnum barrel in factory as well as the mag extension, I removed the plug. I have added 6 shot side saddle dual pistol grips, folding stock, surefire light, and laser, and heat shroud. I do not want to lose my gun, so could you please tell me if the gun is legal in its current state. THanks again Mark.

    You are confusing assault "rifle" with assault "weapon". This is natural, the people who invented the term "assault weapon" WANTED this confusion.

    An assault rifle is a military weapon, with a shortened cartridge, capable of full-auto fire. In other words, a kind of machine gun. Full auto versions of the M-16, AK-47, G3, FAL, and the original SG44 from WWII are all exapmles of this.

    An assault weapon is a made-up term, invented for the 1994 AWB law. All assault weapons are semi-auto, one shot to one pull of the trigger. What makes a weapon decreed an assault weapon is simply being listed in the law.

    Since I have been studying Greek lately, I'll give a more direct translation of the Thermopylae Monument: "Stranger, tell the Lakedaemonians that in agreement with their customs, we lie here."

    there are assualt rifles, assault shotguns, and assault pistols. assault means to assault, to take, to be on the offense. in order to be on the offense, you need a lot of firepower, a lot of bullets, shotshells, and a lot of gadgets to get the assault done. defensive weapons are to defend, to stand your ground, to hold fast, or to cover during a retreat. the anti gun laws are trying to take away the option of assaulting with extreme force. so, anything designed to offer extreme force in design is what the law is trying to do away with. the problem is, every state defines assault differently. if the original poster had asked...'what makes a shotgun an assault shotgun,' we all would have given better answers. but because the thread asked if a shotgun could be made into a rifle, it thru most of us off. so, if our original poster was asking, 'what makes my shotgun an assault shotgun,' you need to check local laws. bbl length, mag capacity, pistol grips, etc...
