Makorav, 9mm conversion and Swedish plastic bullet

Need some feedback here. I recently talked a good friend into buyin a advertised new condition Makorov from Aimsurplus.com. He reports back to me via email that he soaked the gun in engine cleaner but all it did was turn the cosmoline into something that looked like "ear wax" (his words). He also reported that there was a lot of rust on the gun. I assume he meant inside the gun because I saw and handled the gun when he got it and on the outside it looked new. I have great faith in Aimsurplus.com and since they advertised the gun as like new, I can't believe that they shipped him one with a lot of rust inside. I know I need to go and actually look at the gun, but in the meantime does anyone have any feedback on this?

Also, has anyone purchased and installed one of the 9mm conversions for the Makorov and is so where do you get them, how much and how well do they work?

And lastly, to anyone who has one of the 9mm conversions, has anyone tried firing any of those Swedish K model machine gun plastic 9mm rounds with the steel .22 BB in the tip in your gun? Since the Makorov is a straight blowback gun, I am guessing that the plastic bullets would function in the gun, just as they will function in the Camp 9 Marlin 9mm semi auto carbine.

    hi i have never heard of a conversion to 9mm for the makarov you can buy a 380 barrel and there is a specail barrel press tool to remove the barrel i believe it was sarco that had these. and to remove cosmoline i use diesel to clean it off and it has worked for me on my surplus rifles

    I can't say a thing about the over all quality of that particular Makarov, but everything I've purchased from AIM has easily exceded my expectations. Larry is quite right, there is no way that a standard Makarov will handle any 9mm Parabellum loadings (which is the caliber of the plastic training ammo). The Makarov is a simple blow back operated handgun and virtually all 9mm Parabellum handguns use a locked breech of some sort. Although the plastic training ammo might fuction, if it is loaded hot enough to operate the action of a Swedish M45 submachinegun it is likely to be too hot for the Makarov. Even if safe there is always the danger of feeding in a few 9mm ball cartridges into the pistol by mistake and that would place a huge strain on the pistols action. The .380 conversions Larry mentioned were once a very popular option, but 9mm Makarov ammo is now so common now that most people find it easier to simply shoot the original cartridge rather than use the .380 conversion.

    thanks Mark, I was hoping you would answer. That clears things up a lot. Funny thing though is that I was posting with one of our GB members who has a Makorov and he has already apparently converted it to 9x19 and was going to take one of the 9x19 conversion barrells and tool it out to handle the .38 super. He sounded like he knew what he was doing but I now wonder if I should contact him and caution him about what he is doing.

    YIKES! The 9mm Makarov has a maximum chamber pressure of around 24,000 PSI while a 9mm Parabellum is nearly 35,000. That is an increase in chamber pressure of about 30% and actually approches (or may well excede) the single high pressure shot that the Makarov pistols are proven with when test fired for function at the factory. I'd keep my distance from any 9mm Parabellum Makarov when on the firing line, although the .380 has a lower chamber pressure than the Makarov and is perfectly safe to use in the pistol. The .38 Super has nearly the identical chamber pressures as the 9mm Parabellum so the risks are the same.

    Fully agree with the above posters, espec. Mark C. Not sure, but are you sure you aren't reading "9mm kurz or 9x17", which IS .380ACP, as Mark has already said. I think the barrel conversion to .380 is still around, but considering the price difference of .380acp and 9mm Makarov, it's somewhat a toss up of an advantage to doing it anymore.
    If it truly is 9x19 that this guy is converting to, lets hope he likes eating thru a straw. .38 super would really be stupid, for even more reasons, especially safety. Wonder if life insurance pays due to gross stupidity?

    I have the Tokarev in 7.62x25. I also have a 9mm barrel.
    Am going to get another 9mm barrel and take it out to a
    38 Super. 3 calibers in one gun. Nice!!

    I don't know how you could use a 9x19 or a 38 super in a Makorov unless you single round loaded it. Both of these are too long to work in the magazine.

    Are you (or your friend) confusing the Tokarev with the Makarov? They are two completely different guns. The Tokarev is fine to convert to 9mmx19; the Makarov is not--as already noted here.
