9mm Para Makarov (cont'd)

Actually, the Russians had made a high-impulse 9x18M (+P+ basically)and a 9x19 Para version of the Makarov. Both utilized a grooved chamber to delay cycling and were supposedly pretty tough on the shooter and the brass. There are a few of these floating around, but seldom encountered. You would not be able to convert a 9x18 version to a 9mm Para as the magazine and well are too short to accept the longer 9x19 cartridge and the cycle length of the gun wouldn't be long enough to pull a non-fired 9x19 cartridge out of the chamber. I've loaded some of 9x18's with 95gr XTP's at 1100-1150fps, and the recoil from that is plenty, I wouldn't want to shoot a 9x19 version[;)] (PS: don't try the handload at home, I have a special 23# recoil spring and the firing pin has been modified to take a return spring as well. If you shoot that load in a 17# equipped Mak, I can't guarantee the happiness of you or your pistol[;)]

    sounds like good advice. thanks for posting the additional information. I had a topic going where I got stupid and confused what another GB member was doing to a Takarov and confused it with the Makarov. Man, was I way out in left field with that idea. But I just couldn't visualize anyone being able to convert a Takarov (basically a .30 caliber??) to ANY kind of 9mm (basically a .38 caliber??). So I just asssumed he was talking about the Makarov. I should have kept my thoughts to myself since I have never seen either gun up close.

    Actually, it's not THAT hard to change a Tokarev to 9mm Para, if you have a new barrel, and a few other things. The mags are a bit long, but can be modified to hold the shorter round.

    Since I have been studying Greek lately, I'll give a more direct translation of the Thermopylae Monument: "Stranger, tell the Lakedaemonians that in agreement with their customs, we lie here."
