COLT 1911 ORIG. DOUBLE DIAMOND&CHECKERED WD GRIPS

THIS IS A CONTINUATION OF AN EARLIER POST :

the two grip panels (l&r) , about the same color of walnut wood, i think , right one a little darker than the left one , have between 5 to 7 lines of checkering between the large diamond points. they are small and i mean small lines, but that's the count i got.

i'm not sure if thats right or wrong for original colt or clone 1911 grips or not.

should there be any kind of marking on the back of the grips that might tell me or lead me to believe they are original or are they pehaps repro grips?

thanks for the help so far and waiting to hear back from our resident guru's on this subject.

    I CAME ACROSS A SET OF THESE THAT CAME OUT OF A LARGE STORAGE TRUNK FROM A RECENTLY DEAD RELATIVE. IT WAS FULL OF PAPERS AND OTHER STUFF THAT I STILL HAVEN'T SORTED THRU YET.

    HE DID SERVE IN WW ONE , FRANCE , BUT NOT SURE IF THEY CAME OFF HIS WEAPON , A PICKED UP ONE FROM OFF SOMEONE ELSE OR ANOTHER COLT, OWNER INKNOWN , OR A COPIED COLT .45 A.C.P. MADE FOR WW ONE. HE WAS IN THE ARTILLERY DURING THE WW ONE POSTING. LATE 1917 TO BE EXACT.

    THEY SHOW NO SPLITS THAT I COULD FIND , EVEN AROUND THE GRIP SCREW HOLES , CRACKS, GOUGES , OR BADLY WORN AREAS , THE HAVE FAIRLY SHARP DIAMOND POINTS THROUGHOUT BOTH OF THE GRIPS AND THE OVERALL WEAR APPEARS TO BE EVEN FOR BOTH L&R GRIPS.

    ANY ONE KNOW WHERE I COULD FIND A BOOK THAT WILL HELP ME BETTER I.D. THESE SO I CAN FIGURE OUT IF THEY ARE THE "REAL MCCOY" OR IF THEY ARE GOOD , GOOD COPY OF 1911 WOOD CHECKERED DOUBLE DIAMOND GRIPS THAT HE MIGHT HAVE PICKED UP SOMEWHERE ALONG THE LINE, SO TO SPEAK. ANY DIRECTION ON THIS REQUEST WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THIS ??? WAS ALSO SENT OFF IN EMAILS FOR POSSIBLE HELP TO SOME OF THE OTHER TOP COLLECTORS OF COLT ITEMS.

    They are commercial stocks.

    Colt stocks have 15 rows of checkering between the large diamonds, Remington grips - 13 rows, Springfield Armory - 11 rows. (This comes from "Collector's Guide to Colt .45 Service Pistols Models of 1911 and 1911A1" by Charles W. Clawson.)

    when you say commercial , you mean repro and not original colt stocks , right ?

    Not original Colt stocks, but there's no way to tell exactly what they are. Some commercial companies made reproductions designed to fit the Colt, but numerous countries (like Brazil) made M1911 clones that used similar stocks.

    You may wish to visit www.jouster.com and attack the 1911/A1 forum. There are extremely knowledagble folks there. I also have Clawson's book and not military-if I have read correctly. If wishing to make big bucks on these stocks-forget it. 101

    NO NOT TRYING TO STRIKE IT RICH WITH THESE , JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF I HAVE COUNTED THEM RIGHT AND WHAT THEY REALLY ARE , POSSIBLY WHO MADE THEM IF THAT'S POSSIBLE TO FIGURE OR FIND OUT.

    I'LL TRY AND GET SOME MORE INFO. AT THE SITE YOU HAVE TOLD ME ABOUT.
