Checking to see if a gun was used in a crime

Someone mentioned to me that there was an online form that you could plug in a gun's serial number to see if it was ever used in a crime?

Anyone know anything about that?

Ive never heard of anything like that. Maybe some states have a system for something like that .

If it was used in a crime how would law enforcement or anyone besides the offender know the serial number unless they had it in their custody? Maybe an online site to check a serial number if it is stolen, but used in a crime? If there is one, and somehow law enforcement knows the serial number and you enter it, if you aren't too computer knowledgeable it won't take much for law enforcement to neotrace your IP, get a subpoena for your ISP, and come knocking on your door asking how you got the gun or why you ran it through the site. Just a heads up from a disgruntled "Big Brother".

Your Source is Wrong...There's No such animal for the Rank and File....Only Law Enforcement has that System and the use of same which is tied into the Federal System....and is now tied into INTERPOL......

unless i'm wrong a gun that is stolen is a crime , therefore an NCIC check of the serial number if reported to the " boys " will only turn up that it is stolen. as far as any other crime being committed with that particular gun , get up to it real , real close to it and ask it !!

there is no such web site for civilians to use, unless you want a felony conviction. all you can do is take weapon to sheriffs dept and let them run sn to see if its stolen.dont just take sn they will want to see weapon,they will not tell you if it has been used in a crime.

so lets say i have an unregistered pistol and i have not a clue where its been or where it came from. so i bring it to a gunsmith to get some repairs/maintence on it. will they run the serial number on it? and i never see the pistol again? or worse yet i go to jail? [?]

iilcreep,I don't think a gunsmith would check every gun that came in,unless you look like your username.
