12ga were all 2 3/4". Early 16ga had short chambers.

Welcome to the forum Win Md12. Maddis is correct all 12 ga. guns were 2&3/4. They didn't start marking the the chamber length on the 12 ga. until 1927 or 1928. The only Md 12s with short chambers were the 16 & 20 ga. The 16ga was 2&9/16, the 20ga was 2&1/2. In 1927 they changed them to 2&3.4.
So I dont know who told you that the early 12 ga. guns had a "2&1/2" chamber thats just wrong. The shells way back when were 2&5/8. Even the Md 1897, in 12 ga. had a 2&3/4 in. chamber. (there were a few in 2&5/8, but most of those had damacus barrels).
    Hope this helps.
    Regards Dave

Win M12: Just an additional note: Don't shoot steel shot through your gun, and stay away from the 2&3/4 in. Magnum loads, (anything above 1&1/4 oz loads, the Mags will beat the breech bolt to death along with the receiver. Happy shooting!! Regards Dave

Is it ok to shoot the occasional slug? I have plans on using it for deer hunting this fall. I will be shooting Winchester slugs. I took the Model 12's out and fired some lightly loaded 7/8oz loads and the guns worked great.[:D]

Win 12: I wouldn't shoot slugs through a Full choke barrel. Then again, cut the slug out of one of the shells and see what kind of clearance you have at the muzzle. Shooting slugs through this early Md 12 if it has a Full choke could cause the barrel to enlarge or split at the muzzle. Reguards Dave

I don't know about sabots, but the Foster style rifled slugs have always been made with a smaller diameter than a full choke.
