1903 A/3 barrels
i have noticed that these barrels are similar to regular 1903 barrels and was wondering is it possible to adapt the rear sight base from a 1903 barrel to a 1903 A/3 barrel, and adapt this to work on a 1903 rifle ? and if so how do you add the base ??

i don't think this is possible, if I remember right the out side profile is different. the 03 is larger dia. where the rear sight sleave fits. I suppose you could machine an adapter sleave to make it fit but this would be cost prohibitive. 0 -
It IS possible, but not without a lot of expensive machinist/gunsmith time involved. Some things are just not worth the trouble.
We're talking a $150 deer rifle here; no point in spending a lot of money just to make it into a slightly different $150 deer rifle. If you're not happy with what you have, sell it & buy what you want.

I am relativelt sure Sarco has correct O.D. barrels originally made for sporter purposes at a fairly reasonable price...I would check with them. Failing that cheap option...I completely agree with the sage advice given already! Don't spend any more than you have to! Also, different rifling pattern, although that makes little difference as they are both plenty accurate

The A3 barrel if I'm not mistaken has two lands while the older 03 has four so someone knowledgeable in Springfields will spot the conversion. And then the markings will not be correct.
I believe there is a setscrew under the ladder sight spring that needs to be removed and the sight driven off forward.
The front sight will have to be removed.
It shouldnt be a big deal for a man with an engine lathe to copy the rear sight mounting of the 03 to the 03A4. Fitting and headspacing the new barrel may cost you a few bucks.
It depends on your objective whether it will be worth it.0 -
The A3's were manufactured with both 2 and 4 groove barrels and,
if memory serves me, SC's even had 5 groove.0 -
Check Hatchers' Notebook pgs 7-8. In May '42 the A3 designation was approved. In 1943 the two groove barrel was approved for the 1903A3 replacing the four groove rifling.
It's possible that old stocks of four groove barrels made between May '42 and 1943 were installed on guns made after the two groove barrels were approved but they better be marked after May 1942.
Hatcher says nothing of five groove barrels for the Springfield but the Enfield rifle did have five grooves.0 -
