Kimber 1911 A1 38 Super
The other day a customer brought in a Kimber Target II in 38sup with an extractor problem. As usual I removed the slide and barrel. Sure enough no extraxtor tension in fact there was a gap. A big gap between the extractor and a 39sup case. The breach face measured out to 40 s&w spec. After a call to Kimber they confirmed it is in fact a 40s&w breach face. My question when Kimber advertises Zero Tolerances and Custom out of the box does this not make you question what else they are doing. Like there use of investment casting of there hammer and sears. What do you people think?

There's only a .020 difference between the rim dimensions of the .38 Super and the .40 S & W.
This works out to only .010 on the edge of the rim that the extractor engages.
As long as they had a properly tensioned extractor, everything would have been OK.
I had the same experience when I bought a NEW Springfield 9 x 23 from CDNN. It wasn't test fired at the factory, I had to put a Colt .38 extractor in it, to make it work.

What you say is true but shoot light target loads and the blow back is reduced so much that extraction problems occur. That .020 makes it nearly impossible to get 5oz of extractor tension. 0 -

It's not .020 of engagement but .010, half the difference. I never worried about the precise ounces of tension when I worked on extractors. I just "tweaked" them until there was positive extraction/function.0 -
first thing i had to do to my kimber 38 super was tweak the extractor never a problem since 0
