Shipping my Firearm
Now that I am shipping out my Beretta back to the factory, I am finding that I must take it to a UPS hub for shipping, and that the container it is shipped in must be double-boxed, and the box itself must be six inches larger all the way around than the box the pistol is packed in.
Having not shipped firearms before, is this since 9/11?

Where did you get this information? I have read the UPS Tariff, & saw no special packaging instructions for firearms.
UPS has always required that fragile/valuable items be properly packaged in a way that would prevent damage during shipment. They have the right to inspect any package to be certain that it is properly packaged. For example, they require all computer equipment to be packaged in the original packaging with foam inserts, or else it must be double-boxed with sufficient impact-absorbing material.
If this bothers you, you will be REALLY annoyed when they tell you that all handguns must be shipped Next Day Air, which will cost you at least $35-40. (That's not a 9/11 rule; it's a "Let's protect ourselves against the thieves that we've hired." rule.)

Hizzoner: I am a firearms dealer and if you had purchased that firearm from me or were a regular customer of mine, I would send it back to the company for you for the cost of postage only. Is it possible that your usual dealer would be in a position of assistance? Just another line of thought. 0 -
Neal and Ron- Isn't there a provision for a private party to use the USPS to return a firearm to the manufacturer for repair?

Ron: Thanks for the idea. I will call the dealer I brought it from tonight to see if he can hook me up. He only comes to San Antonio monthly for the gun show, but I've bought several firearms from him.

Hangfire: I like to quote the Ruger Firearms manual as it explains it easily:
Quote "Under the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968, a person who is legally eligible to purchase and possess a handgun may return that handgun to the manufacturer for repair. A person who does not hold a currently valid Federal Firarms License cannot ship the handgun by mail. He must ship the handgun by common carrier. UPS is a common carrier." End of quote.
This refers to handguns only. Long guns can be mailed, under varying conditions, by unlicensed individuals.0 -
Due yourself a favor and save a lot of hassel, by shipping it FedEx. That is if the Dealer you got it from, won't ship it for you.
From my long years and many confrontations with UPS, my concerted opinion is that if it's "BROWN", flush it.

Well, my dealer just called me and told me to send it via commercial carrier. So I guess FedEx is the preferred shipper for you guys?
