    It's a stupid time when you have to post a disclaimer before trying to give a good answer to a question but here it is anyway and don't take it personally, just use common sense:

    If you DO NOT have significant reloading experience with wildcats and Ackley Improved cartridges, you should not even be attempting this activity.

    You will have one heck of a time finding information on the 6-06 AI. My suggestion would be to try to locate information regarding the 240 Gibbs (75 gr. of H2O) which should have just a bit more capacity than the the 6-06 AI (72 gr. H2O). Rocky's wife was instructed to destroy all of his notes upon his death so there will be slim pickins here, also. Wolfe Publishing did a book on Gibb's reloading but trying to find one of those is equally as hard. You can do a search on this forum for threads about Gibb's reloading since it has been brought up a couple of times, at least.

    It's now generally accepted to start with a near capacity load from the basic case, when working out fireforming loads for an Ackley Improved case. The reasoning is that the case will expand in the chamber to the larger Ackley Improved dimensions, thereby allowing the pressure to reduce safely. This has worked on multiple occasions in my firearms but each firearm is a individual all unto itself. I have built a fixture to hold my rifles while I move off to a safe distance and use a remote actuated trigger. An old tire and a string will work just fine. Put something between you and the firearm; tree, car, truck, boulder, something while doing your testing, for the sake of precaution.

    72 - 75 grains of powder is an inordinate amount to put behind a bullet in the smallish 6mm bore, no matter how heavy the bullet is. It calls for extremely slow powder and therefore extremely long barrels. The disparity is magnified when folks think about using light bullets. The laws of physics stay fairly constant and you end up wasting a bunch of good powder and getting nothing extra in return except a trashed barrel.

    Now, if you want to start with a regular '06 (or 25-06) case and neck down to standard 6-06, then I suggest the following:

    There is just about zero information on the 6-06 simply because there really isn't any big call for it. We already have the 240 Weatherby and the 6-284 which have almost identical case capacities for the 6-06 basic case. Use the information for either or both of these and start low then work up carefully to your accuracy nodes.

    thank you. i have been at this loading stuff for 30 yrs. now. i have several wildcats to which there is not much info on. i have built 7 rifles also, so i'm not a new kid on the block ,so to speak. i'll do some more research and get a grip on this one, thanks again.

    think youll find 240 weatherby loading info practically identical. ackleys book also covers several wildcats with similar case capacity.

    there are 2 individuals with new 6mm-06AI rifles and several gunsmiths over at accuratereloading.com discussing that round right now. search for a member by the name of "fiftydriver". He is a gunsmith and there is a picture of the 6mm-06ai he just finished for a member posted over there. he has a wealth of info on that caliber and has also healped me with data for my 6.5-06AI.

    Great choice BTW,....I have yet to see an ackley improved caliber not shoot superbly.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
