Ok I gree thata bullet made out of ice won'r work and when you put it in a sabotall the benefits are gone.

A sabot would probably work. One of the things we did in the criminalistics lab I taught was to attempt to match sabots recovered from rifled shotguns. They did not exhibit the tiny striations required for a posite match. 0 -

Rock salt, like a round "sugar cube", won't work in a gun firing a solid projectile; it's low density, combined with a highly crystalline structure, would cause it to break up immediately upon firing. (That's IF you could mold it into the proper shape.)
However, for many years rock salt was loaded in shotshells by many in rural areas for use as a "non lethal" deterrent for troublemakers. Although it CAN be fatal at close range, it will usually cause only painful stinging in muscle tissue at medium to long range. I haven't heard of its use in many years, as fear of jail & financial liability makes it unwise to fire ANYTHING at anyone who is not a threat to your life.

I had a d iskussion with a few feool student who are virologists.
Back in the day there was a russian or roumanian dissident who got killed in London using a small poiseoned capsule. The prokectile was a hollow platinum ball fiiled with poison. Theu used a mini air gun.

It is probably possible to attach a a deadly virus or poison on a rocksalt projectile. once the salt will dissolve it actvates the virus/ poison and a few days later the object is dead.

Between the velocity and the rotation of the projectile fired from a rifle (>250,000 rpm) anything that is not well constructed will fly apart. Ice, sugar, and dog crap are all ill-suited for use as a projectile[;)] I was thinking that two or three prunes packed in a shotgun shell would put the hurt on troublemakers, maybe a handful of raisins[}:)]

Brect - the russian in question was killed by a toxin known as ricin. It was injected via KGB hitman with a modified umbrella tip. He wasn't shot, he was stuck. 0 -
Beeramid, I was under the impression it was a tiny pellet fired with a CO2 charge or something similar. BTW, it was a Bulgarian national (as was the victim) operating under KGB control; the Soviets provided the means, the planning, the support and had complete deniability on the face of the matter.

Iconoclast is quite correct in that the assassin and his victim (Geogi Markov, who was a defector broadcasting in London for the BBC and Radio Free Europe) were both Bulgarian and the umbrella used in the crime fired a very small ball bearing type of projectille through the use of compressed gas (CO2). A lesser known, but identical case, was the the attempted assassination of another Bulgarian defector named Vladimir Kostov in the Paris subway. Kostov survived because the pellet injected into him contained a less than lethal dose of ricin. Luckily for me I have the funds available to purchase ammunition loaded with real metal projectiles and don't have to worry about "rolling my own" salt or ice bullets in order to go shooting!

I saw the same special. Mythbusters also tried out the umbrella gun during the ice bullet segment.
Along the less lethal lines, where can I get lead "dust" (mostly for shooting pigeons in the barn)?
