ar 15 trouble?

there are several problems with the ar 15
1. The tube directing the gas back th the boltcarrier is slightly of center. Is there a possibility to take it apart and recenter everything.
2. ther is a extraction problen when using a short barrel (7.5 ")
The bolt does not travel all the way back. Are there different springs that help?
what can I do to get rid of those problems?

    Hello REF your problem #2 I think you have a problem # 3 with BATF and would take this question off this site . I don't think a 7.5 inch barrel is legal. quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"

    I've sworn off of firearms legal answers for the duration and am turning all such questions over to Competentone...I'll just assume your rifle is legal. There are often serious functioning issues with super-short barreled AR type rifles and most of them are caused by the changes in gas pressure from the shorter gas tube and the tapping of the gas from much closer to the breech (due to the shorter barrel). This is an area where the serivces of a GOOD gun smith are a must. There are a couple of methods which I have seen used to rememdy this problem. The first is drilling the gas port using numbered drill bits (which are measured in 1/1000 rather than 1/16 or 1/32 of an inch). The typical range is an opening between 40 and 44 but all rifles are different so there are no hard fast rules. the other method I've seen is the use of a "pig-tailed" gas tube which is twisted in a way to have the same length as the tube found on a 20" barrel but due to its twists will fit easily over the top of your short barrel. There could be a struggle involved here since barrels under 11" are notoriously tough to get to function correctly on AR rifles.

    Mark Christian is right, your jamming problem is being caused by the gas system. AR's with barrels this short are indeed tough to get to function and if you do manage to get it cycling correctly it will be finicky. It'll probably only be reliable with one brand of ammunition.

    IMHO, AR's with barrels this short are a novelty, not serious tools. If you need serious firepower that's this small I suggest you take a look at a Mini or Micro UZI. They're not .223 but are very reliable.

    Good point. Doesn't Bushmaster own the Carbon15 pistol? Maybe you can go to their site and buy a gas tube.

    Even the Bushmaster pistol you refer to is notorious for being finicky. The AR gas system and the .223 round just aren't designed for use with such a short barrel and minor variances in ammumition become magnified.

    You say your firearm is intended for LEO use, where absolute reliability is more than just desired. It's the first requirement. I've been an LEO/SWAT firearms instructor for more years than I wish to count. When these types of weapons were first introduced they seemed like a good idea and were tested by numerous agencies. I know of none who ended up adopting them.

    I wish you all the best in getting this gun to work for you and hope you enjoy it, but I stand by what I said in my earlier post. They're fun to play with on the range, but IMHO not reliable enough for business use.

    You need to increase the gas port size by using successively larger number drills until you get reliable ejection and feeding.
    On the gas tube. These tubes are relatively soft and can be straightened by hand. To do this you have to remove the gas block by driving the retaining taper pins from right to left.

    AMAZING how many people assume everything out of the ordinary is illegal... I own plenty of SBRs, machineguns too, all legal.

    As far as cycling, you need to get a pigtail gas tube... it makes several turns around the barrel to give you more reliable cycling thru a larger gas supply.

    Gas tube crooked? It passes thru the delta ring that holds your barrel to your receiver... if this isn't timed properly your tube will be off center. Check and address this problem as you really can't straighten the gas tube even though it is soft unless the hole it passes thru is straight!

    Uzi? no way... too heavy and not very versatile. Get a Tommy15 subgun if you want the best of all worlds.

    i have one follow up question.
    Whenever you have trouble with a pistol you can change the spring.
    Are there differeent springs available for the ar15?
    Seems a lot easier then starting to drill in the barrel.
