Winchester Model 94 30-30 ***FREE***

Sold a car to a friend for $1.00.
Next day he gave me a Winchester model 94 30-30 with a 20" barrel (great bore), plain straight grip walnut stock, open sights, serial # 46088xx. Gun is in very good condition.
This is my first lever gun and the 30-30 round is new to me.
I don't hunt any more (OLD fart) but want to work up some loads to punch some 100-200 yard paper.
So, what have I got here ?
Will it do 2" at 100 yards ? 4" at 200 yards?
Was it made in the 80s ?
Is it worth $200.00 ?
Will I have too much fun with it ?

    Made around 1978.As far as the accuracy goes I've not fired one in years.You can't beat the price.[^][:)][8D][:p]

    Bert or Winchestersonly will ring in to correct us, but it is a newer (not pre64) model. As far as the 2" and 4" at 100 and 200 yards, maybe with proper loading. I haven't come close with mine. Now that could be the eyes, but I think my bore needs some help. Also I'm using an assorment of manufactured ammo trying to find one that pipes thru good. Not having alot of luck with it. Kinda went stagnent with it. Good luck! Mine's a pre 64[8D]

    For target work, AS A SINGLE SHOT ONLY, you have the option of using the spitzer style bullet. In addition to the "tube mag dangers, your OAL will probably be to long to cycle from the mag.
    You will find that they (spitzers) group much better than the normal "30-30" bullets. Even so, you will find groups in the 1.5-2" range will be about as good as it gets.

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    i think you will discover that the WIN `94 that will hold a 100 yd group under 4" is the HOLY GRAIL of lever actions. this gun is designed and used currently for one basic purpose, to kill deer. the average shot on deer in north america is made at 78 yds.

    you chances of acheiving a 4" group at 200 yds are almost non existant. even with custom handloads using pointed boatail heads (single load only) its doubtful that you will approach that level of accuracy.

    $200.00 for an 80`s production used standard `94 in very good condition is a little high. $150.00 seems a more appropriate value.

    dont get me wrong. i own a win `94 inland carbine (pre-64) in .32 win spl. i thought the gun was defective or had some serious problem when (even with custom handloads) i could not get 10 rds into a 3" circle at 100 yds. i soon learned that those groups are considered better than average for this model of gun.

    adding a scope might help... i have the standard iron sights on mine. i have considered adding a peep sight, or tang sight to see if i can cut down my group size.

    these are well made guns, and almost everyone owns one. more game in north america in the last 100 yrs has been killed with a win `94 in
    .30-30 wcf than all others combined. having said this, its not a target gun, and 200 yds from a 20" bbl with the .30-30 wcf is a losing proposition as far as small groups go.

    Don't let others poo poo you too badly!! LOL

    I have loaded 30/30 ammo with match grade 150gr. hollow point bullets and using just a simple 4x scope have shot 3/4" groups. I just wanted to see what these rifles are CAPABLE of. Of course you can't use them in the tubular magazine, but it proved to me that 99% of the problem was due to the poor bullet selection. Now maybe if I mounted a 24x varmint scope I could shoot benchrest........

    ....I never met a gun I didn't like!
