shotgun shell detonating? part 2

what makes shotshells different than bullets is once the wad moves forward enough to open the shotshell crimp, the pellets roll down the bbl if the wad stops. that means, there is no pressure behind any lead. the pressure is only behind a piece of plastic. thus the 'spooot' or 'piff' sound an undercharged load makes as pressure escapes around the plastic wad and shell crimp deformities as it either melts or changes shape under pressure. the only time you have a serious problem is if you get a full charged load going off with a cocked wad due to sloppy reloading. repeat, full charge. youll see flames and it really booms as it exits. not fun if it happens in a semi auto and youre a lefty.(me.) so, to continue the thread, if you shoot an undercharged shotgun shell, no explosions folks, just piff and poof and pellets rolling out the muzzle.

    All experenced trap and skeet shooters carry a brass "drop" to clear the wad from the barrel. Factory ammo is not immune to this problem either BTW.

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    A real trap field will have a wood or plastic rod to push out the wad, or in some cases an empty shell stuck behind the extractor.
