New England Firearms (NEF), or a Harrington & Richardson (H&R), both in 10ga or 12ga. You can also find these regulary at Pawn/Consignment stores in great shape. Usually between $50-$100. Can get new NEF at WallyWorld ~$80-90.

I haven't used any of the modern single shotguns but I sure do like the pre-WWII Iver Johnson Champion that I own. I've had it since I was born--given to me by an uncle before I was born actually. The only thing that ever happened to it was the main spring finally broke and I had to replace it with a new one from Gun Parts-Numrich. It's a 5 minute job(if you are slow). I also have a 410 Stevens single shot that is deadly on squirrels and I've never had to replace anything on it except a broken firing pin(2 minute job). It too is an old gun-made in the 1940's. My dad gave it to me for my 7th birthday and took me squirrel hunting with it the next day he had off. Both have been busy since including use by my children and now grandchildren. Simple and tough old guns.
