glock model22 question

I just purchased a used LEO Glock model 22. I would like to know how to identify the manufacture date, specificaly, what generation pistol. Being uninformed about these, does the first, second, third generation refer to the pistol itself or just the mags? The gun came with 2 preban LEO mags.

    I'm not a Glock expert, but I will try. First things first, are the mags marked LEO? If so they are not legal for you to own, if they are not marked LEO then they are legal. Glock pistols can be first or second generation. The second generation have the finger grooves on the front of the grip, the first generation have a straight front grip. The mags come in first, second or third generation. If you look in the small holes in the back of the mag and you can see metal, then you have a 2nd or 3rd generation. The first generation mags did not have metal linings in them. The way to tell 1st from 2nd and 3rd is if you look at the back of the mag on the top if the notch where the slide picks up the round is squared off, then it is a third generation, if it is round then it is 1st generation. I have had all 3 generations. The first generation mags will not drop out of the gun, they must be pulled out, they are also known as non-drop free, the second generation would drop free if they are empty, but not if they are full. The third generation will drop free even if they are full. I think this is all accurate, but maybe someone with more knowledge of Glocks will correct me.

    I think you may only have to get rid of those mags if they are illegal in your state because you can have hi-caps as long as they are made after the ban date, and I can't imagine a store selling you LEO only mags.

    Worst comes to worst sell them to an LEO, maybe try gunbroker.com

    You can transfer the mags to an officer or agency, but don't expect to get much for them.

    I had a BUNCH of Glock LEO mags awhile back. Took me a long time to sell them through Gunbroker at $16 each.

    I've posted a FOR TRADE only ad on gunbroker. I haven't seen one of my local LEO's to ask if they are legal or not. How can I tell if a hi cap mag is pre ban or not? I'm guessing post ban mags are the ones like I have, marked LEO only. I'll see what happens. Maybe one of my local LEO's will trade me for non marked mags. LOL

    Your right Red, if they are not marked at all, then they are preban. And as far as what pips said, I know of big chain stores around my area that have sold LEO mags to people. They take a gun in trade, see that it has two mags and don't check to see what the mags are. I would take them to the local PD and turn them in. As far as selling them on Gunbroker, you are not even allowed to have them much less sell them. You may try selling them to a local gun shop also. Even a better idea would be to take them back to the store you bought them from and tell them you want legal mags, not the illegal ones they sold you. I bet the manager would be real happy to take those mags off your hands, because they did something illegal by selling them to you.

    I can't take the mags back as I bought the gun from a private party. I'll just see what happens and get some legal mags in the mean time. I will check with my local PD and see if anyone is interested.

    Well, at least if they don't pass a renewal on them. But the question still remains, if they're marked LEO only, how does the pre/post ban laws effect things? No biggie, it'll work out, always does.
