hi,looking for some reloading suggestions for the dragunov. i have most of the loadbooks allready, but i am thinking that perhaps loading it like for the garand in terms of sggested powders[4895,etc] and a bullet weight of 150 grains might be on the right track.any help would be appreciated. thanks, stevek.

Assuming you are sticking with 150 grainers, I think 4895 is an excellent choice. 4064 would not be bad either. Have you tried heavier bullets? Bullets in the 311 diameter range? Also wondering if you have stuck to the 308's they reccommend? Do you know your twist rate and by the same token have you slugged the bore? My Tokarev has taken a singular like to 175 gr Sierra gamekings for the 303 Brit over 36 or so gr.'s of 4895 and seems to dislike about anything else I try (and destroys brass because of the fluted chamber!). Seems to differ alot from gun to gun. Try posting back with a few more answeres to the questions I posed and we'll see what we can do!

have not slugged the bore, don't want to because, it would seem that it has to be standardized at this point. have miked the pulled wolf bullet, which was about .310, .309.that shoots great , but for deer, not a good bullet. maybe going to have to slug the dang thing.however, i have figured out the scope that came w/it. patience is a virtue, or at least, an asset.great 200m groups , about 3'', w/not a great rest w/ the wolf stuff. so on the right track. thanks. 0 -

Wow!! 200 meter groups at "3 or so is pretty good by my standards! Sounds to me like since this is a former com-bloc weapons producer and it seems to like the Wolf .310's then you could get away with using 303 bullets for reloading, but to be on the safe side I would start REALLY low on the powder charge and build up slowly, watching for incipient pressure indications on the brass. Since there is likely only a ".001 difference in the diameter of the 7.62 and 303 projectiles, there should be very little if any problem at all. I would also look for indications of heavy copper fouling to determine if this is a good application or not.
I would still reccommend checking the barrel twist to find a good starting point bullet wise. Unless you know the twist, use a tight patch, make a vertical mark lengthwise on your cleaning rod, and run it down the bore until you have made one full revolution of the rod. Mark the rod at the muzzle, remove the rod from the bore and measure the length between marks to determine the twist; i.e. 1 in "10, 1 in "9, usually represented as 1:10, 1:9 etc... I use 303 bullets routinely in my &.62 x 54 rounds as there are no good/reasonably priced bullets available in the diameter, the only real option seeming to be Norma and Lapua, and we all know how expensive that stuff is! Also, if you use the 303, there seems to be a good supply of reasonably priced game bullets out there, and most of the 123 gr. ".310 bullets I find are FMJ which I am sure you would like to avoid for deer hunting etc... Hope this helps!
