Golcher
I was given a rifle when my Father passed away. I was trying to learn more about it. Here are the specifics, any help would be appreciated:
Octagonal Barrel.
IOS Golcher inscribed on side by hammer with a lot of scroll work.
Area on butt that opens for storage appears brass.
Inscribed on top of barrel is "J * Bear"
Inscribed on a small plate on top of butt are the initials "AF"
two triggers and single barrel.
A ram rod.
Any help appreciated.
Thank You
Spencer

Golcher (Goulcher) made the lock. I believe Bear made the gun.
Give full details and photos as it's possible that you have a rather nice gun.
J. Bear isn't a name I recognize, but that doesn't mean much. All I can say at this point is that a nice Pennsylvania rifle (if it is one)will bring good money. A really nice one will knock your socks off.

How can I include photos?
What other specifics due you need to know about the rifle?

Welcome to the Ask the Experts Forum....Its going to take a little more information to be able to help you with your GOLCHER/GOULCHER..Differant Spelling...but the same Family! Is this Gun a Half Stock Plains Rifle or a Full Stock Kentucky...What is the caliber? If I/We know that...then We can pretty much tell what Gun it is....The Area that opens on the Butt stock is Known as a Patch Box..Where Waxed patchs and or Cleaning Patchs were Kept and I've even Found percussion Caps in some Patch Boxes...I believe the J. BEAR was the Barrel Maker...It will take a little digging for me to find My Barrel List...If You'll give me the Caliber...it will help a bunch..! The Initials were the Owners somewhere along the Line, and I've No idea as to the Name of 'AF'....What kind of Wood is it? Walnut? Maple? Fiddleback or Birdseye.... The Two Triggers mean this Rifle has SET TRIGGERS...If You can Post a Photo or two...it would be of immence help....I/We await your pleasure.......
