COLT NEW POLICE / NEW YORK POLICE marked

6. 75% finish (original blue)
7. perfect timing, lock up, no play in gun at all
8. perfect forcing cone, muzzle crown, hammer
9. LEFT OF BBL: "COLT NEW POLICE 32"
10. LEFT OF FRAME (rear of cyl latch): the rampant hartford horsey logo / proof "COLT`S NEW POLICE" around the logo
11. SER# 6062 (pre-#7900)
12. all parts / numbers matching factory original
13. BACKSTRAP: "New York Police" engraved in a semi fancy script / font (we are pretty positive its original, as we know the guns history / provanance)
14. TOP OF BBL: "COLT`S PT.FA. MFG.CO. HARTFORD CT U.S.A. PAT. AUG.5.84.NOV.6.1888."

what is the value of the gun??? does the NEW YORK POLICE backstrap marking add to the value??? how much does the PREE#7900 SER# add to the value??? is it of intrest to collectors??? how rare is this piece with these markings??? how many of these made / marked???

i am out of my league on this one. i do not know much about these COLTS, or the NYP markings. i thought an auction start with no reserve of $500.00 was fair, but i do not know what the real value is based on the markings, grips, and SER# range. this question is posed for a retired police officer who is a customer.

    I have Ser #5132 Cal 32 Colt that does not have any police marking.
    I was under the impression that the 1st 4500 went to the NYD

    Some people are like Slinkies . . .. not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs

    Your gun was manufactured in 1900. The New Police was manufactured from 1896 to 1907 and approx. 49,500 were made.

    Blue Book Value:

    80% - $325
    70% - $275

    The "New York Police" should add to the value (to the right buyer), but I have no idea of how much.

    No real way of telling, mrmike. As I mentioned above, the Blue Book value is around $300. The "New York Police" mark may, or may not, add to the value of the gun......depending on the buyer.

    Lists it at 550 Exc, $425 VG
    As yours is discribed I think $500 is a fair price.

    I still wonder about the NYPD since it is out of the Ser range of ones first purchased by NYPD and the "Fancy Script" however it may be of some extra value to some collectors

    we are familiar with the customer, and the gun belonged to a great uncle who was a NEW YORK POLICE SGT.

    i am 95% sure that this is an original, period correct engraving. i am confident that it is not a fake or later add on.

    NYC has a huge number of armed police including NYPD, Transit and Housing Police. Until recently, a policeman's widow had a very short time frame to get rid of his sevice weapon. Most of them were sold to Bob Froelich who had a store right down the street from the main police headquarters on Center Market St. John Jovino Co which was right across from the same building supplied most of the new guns. Bob wholesaled the used guns for a very low price and they were very common. Originally, the PD supplied the on duty guns, which were marked as your's was and when they were traded in by the department to Jovino Co, they were immediately wholesaled off in huge quantities. In most cases a PD marked gun doesn't bring a premium. The used guns sold by SOG, etc, for the most part are PD trade ins and while they are being sold off they actually depress the price. The only exception that I can think of is Texas Ranger guns, because there are a lot of rich folks down there who collect guns and badges associated with that agency.

    sir,the .32 new police was the first standardised arm for nypd and were approved by then commissioner teddy roosevelt, serial # 1 was sent to him.starting in 1896 4,500 were delivered with the factory new york police backstrap markings. this according to r.l wilsons colt an american legend
