The ones I've seen were packed in a "Sabot" ( don't know if I spelled it right ). They weren't ejected until the Sabot opened up after leaving the barrel.

I reload my own flechettes. Buy the 1 inch length in bulk on the internet and load them in regular plastic shot wads. About 26 will fit in a 12 GA 2 3/4 inch shell. 13 facing forward and 13 backward, the backward ones will straighten out in flight due to the fins. The flechettes are much lighter than shot so a light load of a fast burning powder like red dot does quite nicely.

I've shot a lot of these loads and it has not done any harm to the barrel on my mossberg 500.

An evil tree bears evil fruit. You can destroy as much fruit as you want, but it will always grow back, and it will always be evil.

Tear the tree out of the ground by the roots and burn it. Burn it to ash and grind out the embers with your boot until there's nothing left. Not a single spark. Not a single seed.

You may want to check your state and local laws as well. Some states have outlawed "specialty" rounds such as flechetts, bolos, dragonsbreath, etc.
I know that Florida has outlawed flachettes and bolos for sure. Don't have any info on other states.

What isn't anymore? After all, a pellet gun is now considered a firearm, and shooting a squirrel with one in your backyard is a felony.

my biggest gripe is that surplus 7.62x54r ammo with steel core is technically illegal in illinois. There isn't a whole lot of surplus in that caliber that isn't steel core.

Isn't there a difference between a Fletchete and Flechettes

1 being small needles that rip the hell out of flesh and the other being single steel rod encased in a shotgun shell to peirce threw body armor.

I seem to recall reading of both kinds.

Why are you wanting flechetts in the first place? Are you a collector? If you are looking for self defense ammo, I would choose something that appeared less "aggressive." A bunch of flying darts that make hamburger out of recepients will be construed as overdoing it a bit.

Besides that, a load of plain number 4 buchshot is hard to beat for self defense.

Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons.
