my guns are rusting
i have expensive guns. i keep them in a metal locker that is not air tight in my basement. i coat them with wd-40 or a light lube in a spray can and wipe them down. i do have a dehumidifier, but i still get little rust spots. i shoot my guns every weekend so i don't want to pack them with grease.is there a better way or a better gun oil ? please remember i don't have money for a real gun safe, all my money goes to ammo.

dont use wd40! use breakfree and put a 60watt light bulb in the locker. keep it on 24/7! btw...my old militia can beat your militia.[8D]

I keep several desicicant bags in various places inside the safe. A lot of people install golden rod electric heaters inside their safes to dry up moistier. 0 -
Why not also try to find a place for them in an upstairs room.

never use WD40 on the surface of your guns. while there may be cause and occasion to lubricate internal parts and mechanisms with oil, use a GUN OIL, designed specificly for guns.

you might want to get a Golden Rod from Cabelas. It might be cheaper than running a light bulb all day. Remember your light bill.

I believe WD-40 is the cause of most of your woes. WD-40 is designed to trap & hold moisture. Go to your local outboard motor dealer & get a can of "corrosion block". It comes in a spray can. Spray a small amount on a small clean rag & wipe your guns.

CONTROL TEMP. CHANGES AND VENTILATE YOUR LOCKER {EXHAUST FAN}. SILICONE PACKS USED IN SHIPPING HELP AND THEY ARE USUALLY THROWN OUT WITH PACKAGING ,BOXES & CRATES . I USE A THIN COAT OF RIG ON GUNS BEING STORED AND NOT USED VERY OFTEN . WD-40 WON'T HELP , IT'S NOT A GUN OIL . BREAK-FREE CLP , REM-OIL , SHEATH AND RIG ARE VERY GOOD FOR PROTECTING YOUR STORED GUNS .

REM-OIL is the way to go, The basement is the WORST place to store your Firearms , I would Strongly suggest first off to get them out of there But if you Must keep them there you will need The golden rod and to Wipe them with the rem-oil at least three times a week along with running a fresh oily patch down the bore aswell.

I realize that there are a myriad of "better" gun oils on the market
than old WD-40 but I have been using the stuff for 30 years.
No rust!Each year at the end of the season I break down each gun I've used thoroughly,
(as far as I'm comfortable with) clean 'em with break-clean and coat
'em with Wd-40.They look brand new except for the normal nicks and scratches from hunting.An old skeet shooter recommended it a ton of years ago. I never had a problem with rust or gumming.I use the same old silicon impregnated rag I bought at K-mart years ago. Of course
my guns are very accesible and I can wipe 'em down while watching the tube and drinking a cup of coffee. So this means that I do this frequently, maybe that's the key. In fact once in a great while wifey has taken it upon herself to wipe 'em down. Twice that I remember in 33 years but she has no problems with me having the guns out in the open
even with the kids around, grandkids now. Ammo is of course locked in a separate locker down cellar0 -
once again thank you everyone. i just ordered bags for my guns and i'm pricing out a golden rod. i can't get rid of my wife she is the most beautiful girl in the world and who else would put up with me. that is another story.
ps. i'm sell this house, and the next one i build will have a gun room upstairs. the wife said i could. she understands the value of my guns but doesn't want my cheap gun locker upstairs, smelling of gun oil, while rich people look at our house.

Interesting side note. I have a Homak metal 8 gun cabinet in a basement room. The room is damp but doesn't leak, it is just basement damp. I have two tubs of damp rid in the room itself, which is about 10X5. The cabinet is off the floor on a wooden platform. There is a golden rod in the cabinet that runs 24/7. I made a false bottom for the cabinet; so the rod is mounted just off the bottom of the cabinet, then there is this plywood bottom held up off the bottom on legs, with about 20 big holes drilled in it for air from the golden rod to circulate. So what do I find? Most of the metal is fine... except for where the buttplates or muzzles touch the wooden platform! The wood seems to eat all the oil and then the metal rusts there! Strange as I even put a humidity gauge in the safe and it IS dry, but apparently there is enough to do this... I solved MY problem by simply slipping a plastic bag over each butt in the safe, with a good coating of oil sprayed in the bag first. But it just goes to show, even a dehumidifier isn't always 100% enough.

VOLVO PENTA, available at a lot of the bigger boat shops, is used to prevent rust even in a salt water environment aboard boats and such. Best product I have ever used for rust prevention and still be able to use item without totally degreasing every time.
