What power scope do I need?

I am shooting a .223 rifle. I want to be accurate to 250 to 300 yards. How much scope do I need? My thinking is some where between 1.5 and 4. [8D]

    I have a 3X9 Leupold Compact on mine. I check it every so often, and it's held a good zero for over 15 years.

    most ar-15, .223 scopes that are made in either 4 or 6 power, i would highly suggest one with a bullet-drop adjustment built in to it also. .223 ammo has a tendency to drop in flight, after about 130 yards, depending on the powder charge and weight of the projectile used.

    What kind of rifle is it and what is the intended targets? Small varmints take a more powerful scope then paper and larger critters.

    ern98: it is an original AR180. The intended target would be what it was designed for.

    A man sized target? I'd stick with a fixed 6x.

    I have a mini 3-9x42 on mine.

    I'd recommend a 1.5-6 power scope.

    Had that on the Steyr Mannlicher Scout-rifle in .308Win..
    Had no trouble at making palmsized 10 shot groups at 200 metres with that.

    Moved the scope (Schmidt&Bender 1,5-6*42, 30mm maintube) onto my Ansh?tz .22LR.. it may be "overkill".. but it's GRRRREAT.

    If you're further out.. a 3-9 power scope would do great.
    If it's smaller varmint type critters - I might go as high as 12 or 15, but then a set of Bipods would do great too.

    Gap1916, I'd have to go with a compact standard scope rather then one of the AR family speciality jobs. It's a hard call as to the vari vs fixed. I'd want something light so personally I would lean towards the leupold line of compacts, probably a four or a six power. My numer 2 would be something in the burris line of compacts.

    Heck, I have a nice Bushnell 4x12 on top of mine. Just in case I wanna shoot a knat in the eye at 250
