Ithaca double questions

Hi all. My first post.
I have an Ithaca double from my wifes grandfather and I'd like to know what you can tell me about it.
Ser # is 4257XX. barrels are 30", choke unknown, double triggers, some engraving on reciever and end of the barrels. Blueing and all metal and bores are excellent! Forearm wood excellent! The stock is cracked, and has been repaired pretty badly. Not repairable.
If it wasnt for the stock, I'd say it's well over 90% overall.
What model is this? What year was it made, and who would have some wood for this, or who can make me a new stock. What would this cost to do? Is it worth repairing?

    Hello Eric...

    You have an Ithaca NID (New Ithaca Double), that was manufactured circa 1926. If I were in your shoes, I would contact Ithaca about having it restocked - http://www.ithacagun.com/product/parts&service.shtml.

    Having it restocked by the actual original maker is MUCH preferable to having it done elsewhere (it will have less of a negative impact on the value/collectability of the gun). Quality stock work is not cheap no matter who does it.

    ctrmas, Welcome ! as to your NID, Bert is correct. As to grade, what does the engraving look like? In lieu of a description, if you look on the water table, there should be a number by itself (aside from the serial number). That will be the grade of the gun. NID's are fairly collectibe and on a par with Win 21's in value (sorry, Bert--I couldn't resist !)

    Liar... you know full well that an average NID is NOWHERE near as valueable as an average Winchester Model 21[}:)][:D]

    Speaking of Winchester Model 21s, Little John Gangel was two of them in his auction this coming Wednesday. Both are Grand Americans (a 20 gauge and a 12 guage), absolutely beautifully engraved, several gold inlays, never been fired, both are cased, and each has a two barrel set[:p]. I was lovingly fondling that 20 gauge something fierce yesterday at his shop, and I will be at the auction on Tuseday & Wednseday. The sad part, is that I don't have the $30,000 it will take to be the high bidder on it[:(][:(][:(]

    I'm looking all over the gun for any more numbers, dont know what the water table is.[B)]
    Inside the reciever has the serial numbers, "patent applied for" and a number 1 over a number 12.
    In the forearm is the same serial number and the number 1 about an inch and a half to the right.
    Looking under the barrel is the same serial number in the 12 o clock position, off to the right of it is a number 1, to the left of the ser # is a number 4, under that on the other barrel is a number 2, which would be in roughly the 7 o clock position or lower left corner.
    What grade would this be? Is this enough info?
    I got a price locally to do a stock. It was in the $800.00 range. I saw the guys work....very nice!![:p]
    Oh I should also mention that it's fitted with a Nydar sight.

    Hello Eric,

    It is a Grade 1 (which is just above a Field Grade). Value for a NID Grade 1 12 gauge is only about $600 if it is in excellent condition (which yours is not due too the busted stock). Before jumping on the $800 price tag for the local stock guy, I would contact Ithaca's custom shop and see what they have to say. I personally would think hard about forking out $800 for a $600 gun.
