S&W K frame 22lr
my dad gave me his old 22lr pistol that he said he bought sometime before he turned 18... he's now 73 i was just curious to know how old the pistol actually is... i am assuming the serial # is hidden under the extractor... on the bottom side of the barrel that # is 6932... the other # that i found on it is on the frame and on the cylinder where it hinges out... that # is 3438.... not sure which # is correct or if the serial # is elsewhere and i didnt see it yet... also what value if any would this pistol have other than sentimental ??

Need physical description of revolver & condition, ( barrel length, grips,etc ). Quality pictures, would be best.

Hi,
Your dad may have bought it in 48 or 49, but from the s/n info given it should be the pre-war K-22 Masterpiece which was mfg. 1940-41 and from the number range it was most likely a 1941 build.

thanks contender... yeah i forgot to add... he said he bought it used and wasnt sure when exactly .. just that he knew it was before he was 18.. the pistol has a 5 inch bbl and custom grips... adjustable rear sight and fixed front... other than wear on the bluing its still a great shooting little piece..i used it as a kid to check my traps 0 -

Hope you are mistaken, re barrel length. According to the S & W book, all the Model K-22 Masterpiece's made circa 1940 - 1941, ( 1067 revolvers total ) in the serial number range 682404 to 696952, were made with 6" barrels.0 -
Rufe, he may be mistakenly measuring from the front of the frame. Leastways I hope someone didn't lop the end of the barrel off.[:(]

the serial # i gave you ... 6932 is on the bottom side of the bbl and that's the total # no #'s deleted... and i noticed you have 6 #'s in the #'s you were giving me ... and yes contender i was measureing to the frame... [:D] 0 -
Is there a letter preceding the serial number, such as the letter "K"? The reason I ask is that there are no 4 digit serial numbers that would match what you've described.
Another place to look for the s/n is on the grip frame.

The serial number on all S&Ws I have seen is on the bottom of the butt,always.Check this one first.The other numbers may be assembly numbers the bottom of the butt is the true number, you may have to remove the grips.Here's a picture or what you're looking for.

OK ... that changes things a bit. Your revolver is a post-war model mfg. in 1947.
Sorry for the confusion, but many posters leave off the last couple digits of the s/n so an assumption was made that you had done the same thing, thus we ended up "close but no cigar".
Anytime you have to give a s/n if there are any letter prefex or suffix info., be sure to include it.
In top condition your revolver is worth around $400. You've got a fine old revolver, enjoy it!
