Compact Scope Fishbowl
Just got my Burris 4-12xAO Compact back from the factory. I sent it back because of a 'looking through a fishbowl' effect when you pan it across a target. Also, focusing on a target is dependant on the AO being adjusted to that range. Burris tells me that this is normal to some degree in compact scopes. They supposedly recalibrated the AO,regassed and tested it. This is my first compact. Are these characteristics normal? And to what degree?

Compacts are exactly what the word is...compact....a smaller, tighter version of a regular.
Will never get the same performance of a standard model because in a compact some things are compromised.
However, that being said, it is more crucial that a compact, any compact is correctly adjusted.
I suspect that your procedure is off somewhere by the way you decribe AO focusing.
Please describe how it's being performed.

When the range to the target and the AO adjustment are grossly mismatched, say AO at 10yds and viewing a target at 100yds the image is blurred. I've never run into this with full size scopes. I assume now that this is just the nature of compacts. Is there a 'procedure' that I'm not aware of, other than matching AO and actual range?
I see now that the only problem is my failure to actually look at and through a scope before buying it. My Bad.[V]

Using your figures....that would be correct. They should be blurry.
Will be glad to help, but list in order, step by step how your making your adjustments.
Let's start thinking that we're at the range, your sighting in with the scope on a rifle that you already know has been accurate.

Having already set the focus(on the crosshairs) against the sky, I would set the AO at 50yds. The target is 50yds away. I then verify this by viewing the target through the scope and moving my eye side to side and watching for crosshair movement on the target. Is there more? BTW, the gun is a 541-S.

I like compact scopes and I have a Burris 4X12 with target knobs and 1/8" adjustments. The only problem I have had with it was when I first got it. The elevation would change each time you took the cap off the adjustment turret. I called Burris and was told that this was impossible and that they had never had that problem on any of their scopes. I insisted that they fix and sent it back to them. When they sent the scope back to me the turret had been replaced and a short note included stating that the cap was indeed changing the adjustment each time it was tightened or removed. The AO adjustment is there so that the scope can be adjusted for the optimum clarity at the range you intend to be shooting. All scopes are either adjusted at the factory at a certain distance or have the AO(adjustable objective) feature on the scope so that the shooter can adjust it himself in the field. I have my opinion on scopes which is my own and probably doesn't fit everyone else's but I tend to be shaped by my experiences. 0 -

It was possible, and not possible.
Turrent itself isn't replaceable as it's part of the main tube.
But, turrent & cap styles were changed.
If caps were mixed up (they would screw on),....then, oh well, you
unfortunately experienced it.
Glad things are ok now.

Your describing Parallex, aka Range Focus error. Whole different item.
Any, and all scopes & bicocs & spotters...must first have the Occular adjustment done correctly. If not a true sight picture will never occur throughout the magnification scale.

When you look thru the scope, and the cross hair is on the target....
are they BOTH sharp & clear at the SAME time?
Or, is one sharper than the other??

Both are clear. However, if I look through it for more than 10 seconds or so, one or the other tends to fuzz. If I look away, then back everything's clear again.

Thought your response would be something similar.
Main problem is it's not adjusted for your eye....yet.
Have instruction adjustment sheets I wrote on different type scopes.
