Full auto MAC

I am looking into buying my father a mac 10, 11 or 12 for a late father's day gift. What is the difference between pre and post ban? We have heard that some can be made fully auto by simply filing down a part. Is this the difference between pre and post? He would prefer one where this is not possible because he thinks it is just asking for legal trouble. Is there a certain thing I can look for to tell which ones can and can't be made fully auto so easily?

Does anybody know a good source to shop for MACs?

    I guess I'll bite. Prebans have a threaded barrel for suppressors. As for the "filing the part for full auto"..just dont go there. Macs are no harder or easier than any other semi-auto. The part wont file itself, so no worries about legality. Southern Ohio Guns carry a selection of Cobray (mac) clones in pre and post ban. Most gun dealers in your area should be able to order from them. Might try a site call Gunbroker..heard there fairly good [:D]

    Well, you should probably buy him a necktie for Fathers Day, as the buying & transfer process could easily take until Christmas.

    The terms "pre" & "post" ban are irrelevant in describing Class III (full auto) weapons. The "ban" applies to "semi automatic assault weapons".

    The best place for you to look for any Class III weapon is at a Class III dealer within your own state. Better yet, find a local Class III dealer who also repairs Class III weapons. Regardless of where you find a gun, it will have to be transferred to your father by a dealer in your state. If your local dealer doesn't have one, he is sure to have sources to obtain one.

    Pre and post ban MAC's a vertually the same, the devil is in the details, and of course price. One BIG difference is the ten years at Club Fed one can incur if found in possesion of a illegal, un-registered, full auto, regardless of model. It is a bit more involved than filing down a part, as previosly stated, don't go there. The pre and post versions are out there, the supply of either is far from dried up.

    Kill all the lawyers and the world will be much better for it.

    My read on your post is that you DON'T WANT A FULL AUTO OR ONE THAT CAN BE CONVERTED.

    The full autos and open bolt guns fall into this catagory.

    The preban closed bolt and post ban closed bolt cannot easily be converted. Stick with these.

    A preban MAC has a treaded barrel and can take detachable mags. This is what you want. With these, you can add barrel shrouds, extentions, gripss laser sights, etc.

    Don't waste your time on the post ban MAC's.

    Skyking, I believe that you read the original posting correctly. I saw the heading "Full auto MAC", & that pointed me in the wrong direction.

    There HAVE been several semi-autos that could easily be converted to full auto, & BATF quickly seized/banned all of these. Their position is that ANY gun that can "easily" be converted to full auto cannot be manufactured/possessed. So, rest assured that any gun you buy today cannot be easily converted.

    No Neal, the ATF did not seize them. They are perfectly legal, they just fire from an open bolt instead of a closeed bolt. Open bolts can be very easily converted, if you want the $10000 fine and the 10 years in prison. Open bolt MACs bring a premium on the market, but they are far from illegal and they have never been seized or even registered.

    Save yer Dad the frustration of malfunctions, misfeeds, misfires and magazine prices; the Macs are notorious for all of the above, and cost a bundle for the select-fire versions that actually work.
    Getcherself a Vector Uzi if you just gotta have a mean-looking 9mm that works; do the Form 4 thing and viola!
