ice Bullet
there is a show called mythbusters on the discovery channel.
In one episode the busted the myth about a bullet made of ice that would not leave a trace once the job is done.
During the show they used i think a 3 caliber buleel made og ice and fired it. Nothing ever arrived at the target.
I wonder if the use of a sabot would allow the use of a ice bullet or if a bullet made of something else like salt would work.

What for? The hell are you trying to do? I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Just go with the meat bullet that they made as it was the most effective yet didnt go but an inch or two deep

IMO the ice bullet wouldn't make it out of the barrel in a solid form. My belief is that the friction would be to great and that only vapor would be expelled from the muzzel. With meat I'm not sure, might be a chance at 77 kelvin. 0 -
Yes!! It will work!! How do I know?? It was in the comic strip of Dick Tracy when I was a kid. And that's good enough for me. Maybe only an inch or two deep but in the temporal area that's enough! 0 -
it has been done, under the correct circumstances, with the correct equipment. you need a resevoir fed lewis and clark expedition style large caliber air rifle, or pehaps a modern european larger bore hunting air rifle.
in a modern gun, with modern propellants, its not feasible or practicle, but in the above narrowly contructed scenario, it will work, kill, and leave no evidance.
its been discussed, and tested, and it does work.

It's been used in some movies that needs to seem futuristic or high-tech.
I can't remember the title, bur the hitmen carried a small container, like a thermos for coffee with liquid nitrogen with a prefabricated bullet in it.
Picked up the projectile and seated it on a prefabricated cartridge, loaded it and fired very shortly after.
Well, the only trouble is, that modern science would quite probably state, that the victim was shot but can't find the bullet.
Another thing is, that even if the ice-projectile is frozen to near absolute zero temperature - the riflebarrel is still well above freezingpoint and will melt the surface of the projectile almost instantly - effectively changing the bullet diameter quite fast.
It is right, that gumpowder solutions are not the prefered for this.
Some kind of high-pressure gas-powered rifle would be better.
But it still leaves you with a short range capability.
Theoretically speaking... your theory about using a saboted ice-projectile instead has no real use, because if a smaller bullet is seated in a sabot - there will be no identifying marks on the projectile anyways - so might as well use a real projectile.
Also, if someone is lucky enough to find the sabot (you might not want to wait around to find it yourself), they can still run a match as the identifying marks would be on the sabot.
So.. in effect, it's easier to just use a real rifle with a soft, unhardened projectile - everything else is too much unproven theory and doesn't quite (im my opinion) have any relative effect or accuracy.

Hello I like Dick Tracy. He sounds like the only one that could do it. He figured out how to keep it intact from the force of being propeled with enough force to do something to whatever it hit. Boom- Shatter- Melt.

What's the point? Eliminating the ballistic trace?
If, so ... use an ultra-frangible round and don't worry about "barrel dribbles" or speed loading a "pork chop"[:D]

Years ago the story about the coldest weather that won the Old Liars Contest involved a muzzle loading hunter who was out of bullets when he was confronted by a grizzle. It was so cold that the beads of sweat on his forehead froze. He wiped them off and loaded his gun with them. When he fired, the frozen pellets melted but re-froze into a solid projectile when it left the barrel. When it entered the bears head, it melted again and the bear died of water on the brain. 0 -
Dick Tracy is Great...But Charlie Chan gets My Vote.....OSS tried to make an Assasin's Weapon for takeing out Bad Guys using Frozen projectiles during the Second World War...Complete and total Flop...By the time the projectile got out the door it was half melted and there was No Accuracy...All was not lost tho...It Turned out that the Frozen Projectiles were great for cooling down Martini's and Shirley Temples.....
