Posting a pic would be best. The M48 makes me think that it may be the M48 Yugo. The crown above a shield and cyrilic (sp?) script also bear this out. Big 5 here about has been selling them in arsenal refinished condition for about $150. More info and pic may let us give a better evaluation. What condition is the bore and the wood in for example.

It does sound like a Yugo model 98-probably 48A,if it has a stamped floorplate. If it has a milled floorplate it most like is the model 48. But, as melvin said, without pictures I would would not be 100% sure. Both makes are excellent rifles.

Most likely a revamped K98, as mentioned by the other gentlemen. The Crown, as described, stamped floorplate and production date indicate so. Does the Cyrillic stamping on the left reciever wall look like it says "prejucecee 44"? If so, the previous posters are correct and you have a preducesee 44, or, 1944 production standard Yugoslavian Mauser. These are really good guns and value is highly dependent upon condition. Prices for a near un-issued condition specimen run from $150 to $250 dollars and often times include a nice accessories kit with bayonet, mag pouches, cleaning kit etc. Unless you have one of the really excellent unissued specimens, shhoters value is the key word here, and as there are literally thousands of them in this country, I would not count on it attaining some lofty sum in the future.

Post pictures when you get a chance and let us know if it is an imported gun or not and as much more info as you can attain and we'll try to narrow it down a bit.
