I have a remington model 742 6mm, and i was wanting to know when it was made? serial #a7308***

    I am having trouble with a Model 742 that wont engage the hammer and sear for the second shot. I can cycle rounds throught it manually and the sear engages every time, Load the mag up, chamber a round, fire... and the second round chambers no problem, but the hammer is not engaged. When I drop the magazine out, the hammer is disingaged resting in the forward position. I have tried short pull/long pull--- slow cycle/fast cycle without live ammo and the sear engages everytime. Any ideas?? I also have compleatly stripped and cleaned/lubed so I am not thinking this is the problem.

    without hands on, i'm guessing that you have a weak sear spring or possibly a worn knotch in the sear or hammer. if so, i can be touched up with some careful file work and spring replacement

    I doubt very much if there is anything wrong with the sear. I suspect "short recoil," caused either by weak ammunition, a clogged gas port or damaged, burred or rusty parts.

    I once had a batch of commercial .223 reloads that would function in a Mini-14 but did not have enough pressure to make an AR-15 function. The gas pressure was insufficient in the AR-15 to force the bolt back far enough to cock the hammer, and the hammer would ride the bolt forward, just like this M742 is doing.

    Are you using reloads in the M742? If so, perhaps they are loaded to light to make the M742 function.

    These are reloads that I was using and I should try factory ammo before I proceed. Whats weird is the bolt cycles far enought to chamber the next round no problem and if I hand cycle the bolt with the minimum amount needed to chamber the next round the hammer engages the sear just fin

    AIf the problem persists with factory ammunition, I would remove the trigger group and check for fouled, rusty or damaged parts. Be sure the sear group is free.

    if the hammer cocks when operating the action manualy but not when the rifle is fired it is A.the little 'tang' on the disconnector is not in the right possition in relation to the sear connector (one sits on top of the other, just change them around). B. short cycling

    Thanks for the replies. It was indeed the disconector on the wrong side. Changed them around and it Works flawlessly now.
