Magazine Clips - Ruger 9mm
Novice back again:
Have a Ruger P85 9mm. Also have several magazines, including a 10 round, 13 round, and two 15 round. All of which are unmarked as to manufacturer. The 15 round magazines will sometimes, but not always, jam on the first automated ejection/injection action of the gun. That is, when I insert a magazine with 15 rounds, and then load one round into the chamber by pulling the slide and releasing it, I have no problem. However, when I fire that round, and the second round jams before it gets into the chamber. Could I have defective or poorly designed magazines in the 15 round magazines. Or could the spring strength of the magazine be too much/fast for the Ruger? If I just partially load (13 rounds or less) the magazines, I get no jams.

It could be a lot of things--many aftermarket magazines are of poor quality--but I'd be suspecting that the magazine spring is actually too weak. I'd suggest trying some Wolff springs in it--you might want to try their stronger than factory spring.

What you describe also could be related to the follower and/or magazine body; it could be binding at the base of the magazine.
Also note that even Ruger's factory magazines can have some difficulties with some 9mm rounds--some 9mm bullets (usually ball/full metal case bullets) are very "long" making the entire round's length a maximum. If the long ammo is loaded in Ruger's magazine--which was designed to handle hollow point bullet ammo (usually a slightly shorter length round) the long ammo will drag heavily at the front and rear of the magazine. You'll especially find this problem in 20-30 round magazines, but the extra friction and a combined factor like a weak magazine spring can cause problems even in 15-round magazines.0 -
Storm, if you are using your P-85 for carry or home defense please use only factory mags or high quality reputable aftermarket mags for insured reliability. Very unlikely that Ruger pistol with Ruger mags will malfuction unless induced by the shooter, but ad a stary dog mag and your asking for problems if ever in a life threatening situiation. I have a P-85 among the other Ruger pistols and know what you are talking aboout and experiencing. Good luck.[:)]

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll follow through. For future reference, can you suggest a reputable aftermarket magazine vendor that would carry 15 round mags? I'll try changing the springs on the existing mags.
