remington model 8
Can someone tell me about this rifle? it is a Remington model 8 in .35 rem. caliber. Bluing and wood seems to be about 95-98%. are these rare or common, how reliable are they, or are they prone to certain problems, and is $275 a good price, thanks in advance...

I acquired two model 8 Remington's and would like to know what the differences mean.
#1 36xxx serial range, 25 rem, with no model number marking.
"Remington trade mark" on the upper tang.
"Remington UMC" inside a circle w/ "Trade Mark" on lower tang
#2 52xxx ser range, 32 rem, with no tang markings.

Hey, Sig-man - The Remington Model 8 was a John Browning design from about 1900 that was made from 1906 to 1936. It was chambered for a series of rimless cartridges. .25 Remington, .30 Remington, .32 Remington and .35 Remington. These were supposed to correspond to the .25-35 Winchester, the venerated .30-30 Winchester and the .32 Winchester Special. In fact, very early guns were marked ".25-35 Rem" and ".30-30 Rem" causing much confusion, I'm sure. The .35 Remington was supposed to fill the same niche (I speculate here) as the .33 Winchester. The .35 Remington cartridge is the only one which is still made. They quit making the .25 Remington cartridge in the mid-1950s, the .30 Remington in 1997 and .32 Remington ammo in 1977(?). The Remington model 8 was not the first American made semi-auto sporting rifle, that honor goes to the Winchester Model 1905, but it used a much more potent cartridge in any loading than the anemic .32 WSL and .35 WSL cartridges. The gun operates on the "long-recoil" principle. It has a barrel which is surrounded by a couple of big recoil springs, and that barrel and the recoil springs is covered by a metal jacket, which makes it look like a shotgun from a distance. Several Remington Model 8s were used by the posse which killed Bonnie and Clyde. I have three and think they are a blast to shoot. Whether they are rare or common kind of depends on what part of the country you are in. Here in west Texas and New Mexico they are rather rare, which works out well because they are consequently not appreciated. This makes the price lower. In states like Maine and Wisconsin and Washington, I believe they are more common, but they are also more appreciated and so a little more pricey. In my limited experience, $275 for a 95 to 98% gun in good operating order is a good price. I think I got my three for an average of $290. 0 -
I agree with Hadrada(A Viking, are you?). I/m originally from Michigan and the 8's and 81's were really well liked deer guns. Watch out for any alterations to the gun like recoil pads etc as these will really shoot the value in the butt! I only have one these days...a 35 Rem. model 8 with bag grip, takedown. Shoots really well and is "2 accurate at 100 yds. It is side mounted for a scope and has a Marble tang sight for quick shots. I really love the gun, but the side mount makes it barely worth the $300 I paid, even though the condition is 95%. I think the price you are looking at, if unaltered, is more than fair.

Agree with the above, had a Model 8 in .25 rem, had been restocked with a nice piece of walnut, and also had many screw holes where the previous owner had tried, unsuccessfully to use a scope mount on the recoil tube. Was happy to get $225. I believe Cabellas has .30 and .35 rem and may have had .25. It ain't cheap ammo, tho. 0 -
The 35 Rem is still readily available and fairly priced, but as mentioned, the 25 and 30 are getting rare and pricey! Why do these people have to drill holes all over their guns? What makes them think they knew more than JMB?!?! Makes you sick, doesn't it Alley challey? Mine would be worth soooo much more if it were'nt for that side mount!

Thanks guys, I have plenty of .35 ammo from my marlin,I have taken many deer with that cartridge. I have fallen into getting into the older Remingtons lately, they are fine peices of Americana,along with my old Winchesters. Thanks again for the info...
