I have my eye on a 1886 winchester in very good condition. It is a .33 cal. with a 24" barrel. I'm not sure if its a takedown or not. any Info would help

    Hello NYGUNS...

    It is quite likely that it is a Lightweight Takedown Rifle (due to the fact that it is a 33 W.C.F. and it has a 24" barrel). If you can provide the serial number, I can determine approximately when it was made (which will help to determine which variant it is as well). Value will be highly dependent upon the overall graded condition, originality, and which variant it is (e.g. Lightweight Rifle, Deluxe Takedown Rifle, ect). As for it possibly being a Takedown, does the magazine tube have a flip-up lever on the end of it? Does it have a pistol grip buttstock, checkered stocks, tang sight?

    The serial number is 130,9XX and it has a pep sight for the rear. Stright stock without checkering and a black bishop buttplate. I dont see a flip up lever at end of magazine tube but there is a hole on bottom of the metal coller at end of forarm stock. It is in at least very good condition.

    Hmmm... things seem to be going downhill for that rifle quickly.

    It was manufactured circa 1902, and appears to be missing its original buttplate. It also appears to be missing the front sling hook eye (which screws into the bottom of the forend tip). Does the buttstock have a sling hook eye screwed into the bottom a few inches forward of the buttplate? Can you tell if the buttstock was cut down to install the Bishop recoil pad (how long is it from the front edge of the stock to the toe, as measured across the bottom of the stock)?

    You have not said what the bore condition is, nor how much of the original factory bluing remains on the frame, and the barrel. For what it is worth, the 33 W.C.F. chambering is next to last in desirability (to collecters), and as such, will have a lower starting value. Can you post a few pictures of this rifle?

    Bert & NYGUNS- Bishop was a supplier of after market stocks like Fagen.They put those plastic buttplates on all their stocks.They didn't make recoil pads.It sounds to me like a replacement ...and since most were sold unfinished, I'd look close at the quality of the inletting and finish.Very few people would have left that plastic buttplate on, so you might be looking at an economy job.

    Also look at the forearm....if its the same color and finish, it was most likely replaced as well.

    Well... that drops the value even further then. I was not aware of what Bishop made... just assumed (incorrectly I might add[:(]) that it was a recoil pad. The replaced buttstock would help explain why the front sling hook eye was removed as well.

    NYGUNS... unless that Model 1886 has a REAL low price on it (less than $800), I would steer completely clear of it.

    With the butt plate removed the hole for the sling is 1 1/2" from the end of stock. The End of the stock is 1 5/8' x 4 7/8 and about 13 3/8" from the front edge of the stock to the toe taken from the bottom. The Stocks look the same and the wood looks old and have some hairline cracks. the but plate looks new not a scratch on it. Bluing is about 90% and the bore is in great shape.

    NYGUNS... the buttstock has been trimmed (probably to fit the aftermarket butt plate). It should measure 14 1/8" from the front edge of the stock to the toe, and 1 1/2" x 3 7/8" (I think you added an extra inch to the height). Again, unless the price tag on this rifle is real low... steer clear of it.
