Milled AK-47...do I have to have one??

I would like a carbine sized rifle of mediun cost that fires the 7.62x39 round. The Ruger Mini-30 comes up as a good buy and the AR types in this caliber are nice but pricey. Would I like a milled receiver AK-47??? If so, which one?

Milled receiver AKs are heavier and AKMs are heavy enough. 0 -
it all depends on the type of shooting you indend to do! stamped aks do well for average shooting like plinking or every so often shooting!!! milled receiver aks all engineered for more heavy shooting and longivity! possibily for an investment, i would have to choose the milled receiver ak! i really like the quality of the bulgarian SLR-95 or the bulgarian SA-93. they are pretty much the same firearm, except the 95 has synthetic furniture and a chrome linned barrel and a factory muzzlebrake. very nice weapon!!!depending on your local, they usually sell for$500.00 to $625.00, the sa-93 is somewhat less, approx. $450.00 to $500.00. there are plenty others available out there, do your best research and shopping!!!! 0 -
I shot my stamped SAR1 AKM next to a guy that was shooting a milled Bulgarian AK47, maybe I'm a better shot but my chrome lined 2003 SAR1 held about the same or tighter groups than his milled Bulgarian. Here's a pic for ya of mine. 
You do need to buy an AK, but I'd take that $100 some dollars you save on the SAR1 or WASR10 and stock up on mags and ammo.
I don't mean to say that you wont enjoy a Bulgarian, you will. Overall they have a much nicer finish than the Romanian guns.

I've had several over the years, some milled or stamped, some long barreled some short. Chineese, Bulgarian etc, they were all good fun to shoot. Your question would be more important if you ever thought you were likely to carry it in combat. If combat is unlikely then pick the one that apeals the most to you when the sprit moves you. You won't go far wrong with any originally built of the AKs. I don't know as much about the home builts on the aftermarket receivers.

I would not step off into a mini 30 for a 7.62 fun semi auto carbine.
I was disapointed in the accuracy of my mini - 14's , even though I did not expect tack drivers. Most probably any of my 7.62's will shoot about that well. A stamped Norinco MAK-90, or something similar, will save you some dough and will shoot fine when slick or after draging it through the sand and dumping it in the river. You could even just stay with a $100 Yugo SKS if you don't get spoiled with using AK mags, and can live with the duck bill mags or stripper clips (and finger burns). [oops, sorry - not carbine length]
One the stamped MAK's at my house is designated as the one you let your bro'in law, office mate, nephew, etc. use to enjoy the semi auto 'assault' experience. It has been shot 'till you could smell the handgard wood smoke over the cloud around you.... after a cool down or clean up it still shoots about as well as the others.
If you have the money to spend, buy one of the better AR's in 223 (that will be my next buy of that style weapon).

I have a VEPR that I love and is as accurate as any other gun I have. It has a RPK (machine gun) receiverthat is milled and is the best AK type rifle on the market.You can look them up on the internet at Robinson Armament or ROBARM (.com).

Just a clarification. The VEPR is a STAMPED receiver. It's an RPK not an AK receiver though. The hype on the VEPR is not hype. The fit/finish/accuracy is not BS. Is it heavy? Yep. Think of it as an "Americanized" RPK (squad machine gun)in semi-auto mode. The barrel has been shortened and the fore stock is made to give it a "hunting" rifle appearance. If you get one, definitely get the muzzle brake.

i have a romanian WASR-10 that i got for $330. i dont think having a milled receiver would be worth the extra money. i would get a new romanian WASR-10 and a couple thousand rounds of ammo. 0 -

anybody that has bought a sar romanian, bought them because of price, and has never fired a real AK-47, especially one that is milled!!! if you bought a romanian SAR, it is a decent gun, but you bought into the importers,{they will buy it ] deal. the romanians thank you and so does that IMPORTER!!!! 0 -
I have a bulgarian milled with the steyer bbl.
Shoots as good as cheap Wolf ammo will allow it, fit and finish is above the bar.[^]
I have shot alot of ak's and short of the vepr(haven't shot one yet so I cannot comment) I would say it is one of the best ak's on the market.[:D]
