Winchester 71 long tang & short tang

I have a friend who has a model 71 deluxe short tang that he is wanting to sell. Is there much difference in value from the earlier long tang and the later short tang if condition is equal? Have looked at past auctions and would like any additional input from those in business. Also any input on reduction of value if buttstock has been shortened for a pad. I speculate that there is still interest in a nice shooter 71 also? Thanks for any input.

    Hello Uintah,

    While the Blue Book says that there is a premium for a "long tang" versus the "short tang", in reality, there is not. Condition and originality is what will drive the collector value of the Model 71.

    Unfortunately for your friend, his rifle has been modified, and as such it is has taken a serious hit in the value (Winchester collectors do not like non original pieces). As a shooter, these are sought after by hunters in the nothern part of our continent, and it is likely to still be worth approximately $500.

    Uintah: Reading through the few books I have that list the Md 71 Deluxe, it mentions, two varieties, one being just the Deluxe Version, and one being the "carbine" meaning they both had 20 in barrels, but shows the "carbine, as a special order. you don't mention what type of recoil pad, if it's factory, it would be the red solid rubber, pad like the one used on the Md 70, and other Winchesters. A factory pad would not detract from the value.

    The "Carbine" version is worth over 2 times what a "Standard Deluxe" is worth. Without seeing pictures, and having a good idea of the condition, not knowing if it's a Factory pad, I wont disagree with Bert, I'd say a minimum of $500. If it's a non factory pad, it could be replaced with a factory pad. Bringing a lot of the value back.

    If the gun were original the long tang version will bring a little more to the "die hard" collector. The fact the stock has been shortened takes those collectors out of the market. It does not make any difference if it is an original Winchester pad or not as the rifles did not come with a pad. There is some talk that some of the last Deluxe rifles were fitted with a No-shok pad if they were ordered. You did not mention if the sling swivels were with the gun. If they are it would add $50.00-$100.00 to the price of the rifle. I would be very surprised if this would be a carbine version as they are quite rare. In very good condition with the swivels I would think the selling price would still be close to $1,000.00.
