  Yes, many different Winchester Models have a letter that appears with the serial number. Technically, it is not actually part of the serial number, but the method in which it was stamped often makes it appear like it is.
  
  Winchester used letters (always starting with "A") to denote minor changes to the action or internal parts on many different models... the Model 1897/97 shotgun went all the way up to an "E" series. The first Model to utilize a letter following the serial number was the Model 1873, which can be found with either an "A" or more commonly, a "B".
