The best 1911 .45???
Alright experts, I've looked at some websites and tried to do my research but I just can't decide who makes the best 1911 .45ACP. I'm not looking for some crazy $1600 match grade pistol, but a solid, reliable .45 for carry purposes probably somewhere if the $700-$800 price range. I have a Glock Mod. 22 so I'm not looking for another polymer gun. I want the feel metal in my hand!! I also have relatively large hands so I don't want something with a tiny grip. Who makes the best 45: Kimber, S&W, Para-Ordanance, Colt, etc.? There are so many different manufacturers to choose from! Can somebody help me out?

I've never fired a Colt. Kimber is the sweetest .45 I've ever fired with Springfield Armory at second place.

Check out Dan Wesson...I think 96harley got one of those and was/is extremely satisfied with it.
Big Al (I'm a Dan Wesson revolver fan, but if I ever DO go semi-auto, Dan Wesson is STILL the way I will go...)

HELLO my vote series 70 colt !! the series 80 took a good idea SWARTZ SAFETY and screwed it up but saying this I think KIMBER new models have a safety that works as SWARTZ designed them and this would be second choice. 0 -
For that amount of money, you will get a very good gun if you buy a Kimber. If money were no object, I would take a Wilson first.

I like the Para-Ordnance P-10 as a carry type gun; the double stack is the highest capacity you can get in a 45 ACP gun with that short a grip, and being a large guy, the fat grip fits my hand very nicely. I like the series 70 Colt's and the Kimber at about equal levels, with the Kimber getting the nod because of their recent manufacture small frames which have concealed carry in mind. I give fourth place to the Springfield Carry, although there is little difference down the line quality-wise. All four I mentioned are excellent weapons; but you have to have favorites so I feel inclined to list them in the order I did!
If price were less of an object...Wilson Combat and Rock River Arms would be a tough decision! Both excellent guns and likely worth every penny you pay for the extra attention to detail!

All of the ones you mentioned are well made and will work well. It is more a matter of picking the size and features you want. I think that in your price range, the loaded Springfield in full size has the best features that most people look for in a carry piece. 0 -
Yesterday I got the chance to shoot the Kimber BP10 that I have been drooling over for a while. I was really suprised by how easy it was to shoot very accurately with. I thought the polymer might add to more recoil but could not tell at all. I have a Kimber Stainless and a Colt Series 70 but want a couple more. [:D] For the money I would go with a Kimber over most others. Wilson, Les Bauer, & Rock River would be nice but I don't have $1500+++ to blow on a handgun.

Colt Government (5") Stainless with Wilson Combat mags - 01091 (1991, replaced 1911).
If the fit and finish are not PERFECT, return it to Colt before shooting it.
They will make it 100% and throw in a trigger job.
The sound of you racking the first round it TREMENDOUS.
You really know the gun if functioning 100% and you'll have a great shooting experience.

For what you get for your money I dont think you could beat a Dan Wesson.They offer a great package with a lot of quality.
