I am trying to find out the value of a S&W 38 Special CTG for my father in law. The serial number on the butt is 6D36948. It has wooden grips and stainless steel hammer and trigger. Inside the frame it has a "1" above the number 58235. It is stamped with Made in USA Marcas. It is blued steel. Any ideas of value???? 0 -
Hi and welcome to the forum.
From the info you provided it appears to be an early M&P (predecessor to the Model 10) that was mfg. between 1909 and 1915. However none were made with brass finished trigger and hammers, so that raises a question.
Ideally you need to post a picture or pictures of the piece. Or at the minimum a better narrative description of it that includes all of the various markings.
We work in the "blind" here, so we only have the information that you give us, so help us to help you.

Not brass. I'd bet somebody gold plated those parts and now the plating has worn.
We used to plate BUNCHES of S&W hammers, triggers and thumbpieces 'back in the day.' Usually for police officers.

I have the images but don't know who to input them into this thread. The FAQ didn't really help me inserting images. 0 -

Some people are like Slinkies . . .. not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs0 -
Here is a picture of the gun. It does look like it was gold plated.

It's not the original S & W Factory finish. Appears to have either been "Plastic Bead" blasted, "Electroless Nickled" plated or both.
Since it's not factory original, it's only value would be as a operable handgun. My 2 cents, $150 - $250.0
