Cutting down a barrel
IF I CAN'T FIND ONE I WOULD LIKE TO CUT THE BARREL OF A S&W MODEL 657 DOWN TO A 3" OR 4" BARREL. THERE IS A 6" ON IT NOW AND IT'S NOT THE FULL LUG BARREL. IS THIS POSSIBLE TO DO AND MAKE IT LOOK RIGHT. I MEAN LIKE PUTTING THE FRONT SIGHT BACK ON AND CROWNING THE BARREL LIKE A FACTORY ONE. LET ME KNOW

I'm thinking of getting an extra barrel for a new model blackhawk in 357 and having the barrel and spent shell extractor rod and houseing cut down to 3", kind of like the old sheriffs model, has anyone else done this or had it done? If so how's the recoil, does the blackhawk still roll in your hand or does the shorter barrel alter the way it reacts? Thanks 0 -
i had ruger do some custom barrel work on mine. from 7 1/2 to 4 5/8 and it seemed to balance better but the trade off is of course more barrel flip. my 2 cents 0 -
Cutting a single action below 4 3/4 starts to shorten the ejector stroke. The .357 having a long case will need enough stroke to kick out the shells, so figure out how short you can cut it or ejection will become a pain. Colt SAAs have been cut to 3 1/2 and functioned
because of 38-40, 44-40 & 32-20 bottlenecked cartridges and the original tapered chambers in the 45 Long.
Sheriffs' models didn't have ejectors.0
