winchester trecnh guns

I was offered to buy model 97 trench gun s/n946891 & model 12 trench gun s/n 1013197 and not sure of their values meeting the guy next week not sure what he is asking.any idea what i should look for??

    Hello gt27...

    There are LOTS of features that you need to be looking for. However, if you are not already aware of exactly what those features are, I would strongly recommend finding someone who is and take that person with you when you go look at the guns, or pass on the deal (unless you have 100% faith in the knowledge and honesty of the person selling them to you). Authentic Winchester Trench Guns in top condition are worth $everal thou$and greenback$ each.

    Both of the serial numbers you listed are in the correct range to be Trench Guns, but most of the "not-so-honest" gun dealers who fake them also know what the correct serial number ranges are.

    It is never a wise decision to buy or collect guns that you are not intimately familar with. I would suggest finding a copy of Joe Poyers' book "U.S. Winchester Trench & Riot Guns", as it will provide just about everything you might want to know about the subject at hand.     gt27: Bert is correct, if you aren't knowledgible on Trench Guns, get someone who is. The Md 97 you mentioned was made in 1949, the Md 12, (according to Riffle, his book on Md 12s) was made in 1943. There are a lot of fakes out there, you can buy the "Inspector" stamps from the GunParts Corp. along with the barrels.

    Only Trench guns in the original factory condition are worth the big bucks. An arsenal redo drops the value, and a gunsmith redo drops it even more.

    Bert H. and only winchesters, have given you some excellent
    info. You can easily get burned on trench guns. Please take their advise to heart.

    Original trench guns of any quality are all in collections now and are extremely rare to find for sale, at any price. Same with Lugers and Colt single actions.

    99% of the trench guns you find for sale now days are redo's are outright fakes. So be careful.

    Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons.
