"Un-Wanted" engraving
I rc'd a gun from my Father-In-Law when he passed away. On the bottom of the reciever is a name & SS number engraved with one of those electric pencils. It's not too deep, but it's really ratty looking.
The gun is not really expensive (Savage Model 24, .222 over 20 Ga.), so I don't want to spend gobs of money removing it.
Any ideas or feedback would be appreciated.

put a piece of duct tape over it with your own name on it. the work to remove it will be too much to justify the cost. most people would weld and grind smooth the surface. guns not worth it.

Most people are surprised at how deep those electirc pencil engravers go until they start grinding it off. Usually you have to remove a lot of metal to get rid of it.
Unless you are ready for some major refinishing, just forget it. The "poor-boy" home grinding methods usually look a lot worse than the engraving.

I agree with the above suggestions......but would Add...Put Your Name and SS# next to it if there's room...otherwise some Game Warden might Stop You for an inspection and be concerned that maybe you Stole the Gun....Not much doubt when You have your name engraved along side also...
