Winchester buttplate #'s

I see a lot of Winchester buttplates for sale. Sometimes the seller will state the the buttplate is marked with a number, i.e. #25, #11, etc. Has anyone ran across a reference to identify which weapon goes with which buttplate?

    I too, see a lot of them listed on places like fleabay. I am not sure what the various numbers really mean that are found on some of those butt plates, but I do not believe that they indicate which model that they were intended for. From what I have seen, there are about four different sizes of the black hard rubber butt plates, and it is easy enough to determine which one you need by measuring the hole spacing. I am not aware of any written reference that specifically talks about or covers all of the various butt plates used by Winchester... but it would be really nice to have such a document[^]

    Good morning Taperloc: I have found no reference, but can pass some info along. Over the years I've had about 15, Md 42s, that I removed the butt plates to pull the stock off. Everyone had M 11 scribed, (scratched) into the back of it. On Md 12s everyone has been blank on the inside, as well as the two Md 37s I have. Based on what I've seen, I've concluded that if it has the M11 on it there is a real good chance it's off a Md 42. Regards Dave

    I recently purchased a hard rubber butt plate for a 94 which is identical to the plate shown in Prilke's, vol. 3 on page 10. I bought this short rifle many years ago, but it had a steel butt plate. Cody says that it was shipped with a hard rubber plate. Everything else is "as shipped" per Cody. The fit is very close. It is marked #25.

    Good morning everyone. Well it could have been a WAG or a SWAG? (wild ass guess or scientific wild ass guess) Taper it should be a close fit, meaning those old hard black rubber butt plates shrink over time. It's a characteristic of the bakilite(sp). One of the first things I look at to determine if the stock has been refinshed. A perfect fit on a gun 50 years or older, I become suspicious that the plate or stock is not original. Regards Dave
