Star 9mm
I have a Star Super SA 9mm with wooden grips and a black enamel finish. I purchased this gun at an auction. SN is 32355. Could anyone tell me how to tell if it uses 9mm or 9 mm Largo ammunition? Also anything about the pistol that would be helpful.

I just came across a Star 9mm made in Spain. Serial # 272666. Trying to find out whatever anyone knows about it.History, Value etc...

My reference shows that if the slide legend is "SA CAL 9mmP" it's chambered for the 9mm Luger Cartridge, AKA 9 x 19mm.
This pistol would be considered a "Super B".
If the slide legend is "S. A. CAL. 38", it's chambered for the 9mm Largo Cartridge. This would be a "Super A".

For a quick answer, the model number should be stamped on the butt near the magazine well. B or B Super is 9mmP; A or A Super is 9mm Largo (NOT .38 Super or 9x23). There are also ASs and BSs--they have magazine safeties like a Browning Hipower. But ALL As use Largo; all Bs use 9mm P or 9mm Luger.0 -
btw, the "SA" stamped on Star and other Spanish pistol slides doesn't have anything to do with model numbers or caliber. It is an abbreviation for the Spanish term for a corporation (Sociedad Anonima). Don't get it confused with anything else--someone recently tried to sell me a Star B Super as a Star model AS (fairly rare) on the "strength" of the "SA" stamping on the slide! Too bad; it was in great condition, just not an AS.....
The other common mistake with Stars is confusing the military rack or inventory number with the serial number. That can get into legal issues in some states like NY.... Stars are excellent guns; you need to read up on them BEFORE you buy one, tho.0 -
I just bought a Mdl B at a local shop
The barrel is marked Cal. 08 and B above the ser# and the slide marked Cal 9mm.
B .08 1942 - 1944 German police/military issue

Your pistol is more than likely Bulgarian, they bought a bunch from Star during the W W II era.

I agree, it's a excellent site. Unfortunately the information they have, is out of date. The Bulgarians did purchase Star B's during W W II. A bunch of them have been imported and sold in the U.S. recently. Some have been upgraded with phoney Waffen Amt's, as Pancho pictured on his site.
The only way your's can be verified as German rather then Bulgarian would be by the serial number range. I believe the serial numbers were published in Witteingtons book.0 -

Post to this forum, the moderator is a expert on Spanish pistols. He would know the serial number range of the Star B's, that the Germans bought.

Thanks for all the information, it really helped a lot...in fact I bought another Star and some ammo and will take them both out tomorrow to see if they shoot as well as they look. I really appreciate all the help. Buckshot Bob 0
